Stop Waste and Global Warming
There are many ways to live green that will save money and time, prevent waste, and even help with the problem of global warming. Here are a few more tips and suggestions that you may find useful.
Bamboo Sheets - Sustainable Fiber
Sheets are typically woven from cotton, silk, or a number of synthetic fibers, and you can choose colors and thread counts. Aside from these more usual fibers, you can buy sheets and pillowcases made of sustainable bamboo fibers or a mix of bamboo and cotton.
Bamboo is eco-friendly, a renewable and sustainble grass plant that can grow as much as a foot per day - 7 feet per week! It has been used to build furniture and flooring, but is relatively new to bedding and linens. The bamboo fibers are actually very soft and fine, producing bed sheets and pillowcases with a silky feel. They are not slippery at all.
Water Saving Irrigation
For an effective watering and irrigation system that needs only a few hours to install, consider a belt type system.
This is an irrigation system that prevents wasted water and is installed without digging trenches in the yard. It offers a convenient design in tubing that allows you to just cut a slot in the ground with a flat-blade shovel or hoe and push the tubing into the ground. This design stops damage to the hoses during freezing as well.
The tubing expands and contracts with the temperature and burst tubes or pipes ae prevented. You attach a belt system to a outside faucet and turn it on manually, but it is best for conservation to use a controller and timer. The brand known as Lawn Belt saves water, money, and time and others companies are offering this system to help saver water and landscaping, especially in dry climates. Keeping lawns moist will helpo reduce overall temperatures.
Pavers Save Water
Lower Driveway and Walk Temperatures
The next time you redo your patio, walkways or driveway, or garden pathways around your house and garden, think about using permeable water saving pavers stones instead of solid concrete or asphalt. Permeable paver stones are eco-friendlier over concrete, because they include holes between the pavers that let rainwater percolate into the ground. This saving of water retains mopister in the ground and lowers temperatures overall.
This also prevents any fast rainwater runoff that will erode soils, spill into local waterways and can cause damage to any driveway and patios, as well as concrete walkways.
The holes between the paver stones are small and relaly insubstantial; they do not interfere with your footing when you walk or move when you drive over the paver staones.
Pvers are a smalle way to make your property a little more green as well as to upgrade your home image attractively.
Recycled Toiets and Sinks
Purchase a new countertop for the bathroom or kitchen that is environmentally friendly. It can be mostly recycled materials. One alternative is a countertop made from recycled paper. Another is the recylcled toilet and sink countertop. They are made from crushed pieces of old toilets, bathtubs, ceramic tiles, and sinks. The surfaces look very attractive and nothing like a sink or toilet. Made by Enviroglas Products and otehr producers, the materials offer a pearl-like finish and in just about any color you can imagine.
The material is most often bone-colored porcelain in neutrals and earth-toned resins, or strong resins colors in black, yellow, red, and blue. The recycled countertops are good in kitchens, bathrooms and workrooms. Planks of the mateiral can be used for flooring.
Save Water in the Bathroom
In addition to using a low-flow toilet, you can conserve more water at home in the bathroom with an eco-friendly Sinkpositive or similar brands of sink.
This is actually an extra sink built into the top of the toilet tank lid, retrofitted to any standard toilet. As soon as you flush the toilet, the sink runs water that would otherwise go right into the toilet tank.
In using this extra sink you can wash your hands right there at the toilet without using thre bathroom sink water, resulting in less water loss at the sink faucets.
Sinkpositive type of extra sinks also removes the fear of germs at bathroom faucets. It also removes the need of turning on faucets for people that have arthritis or weak or small hands. These sinks can be founs online.
Greener Salads
The Salad Sac leads to a greener salad and a greener life. It saves time and money by preserving vegetables longer in the refrigerator Salads won't wilt and will stay fresh for several days. You can discard the salad spinner. A reusable bag, the Salad Sac is machine washable and dryer safe and can jooin a load of kitchen towels.
Besides salad, this particular bag is good for any vegetables you keep on hand in the refrigerator. Wash and trim up any vegetables and even whole iceberg lettuce, other types of lettuce, and fresh herbs and store in a damp Salad Sac. The bag will absorb all water and prevent odd form transferring through the bag. Available online.
