On June 17, 2009 Indeed.com, one of the largest job search engines in America, listed a total of 2,657, 563 job openings (an increase of over 100,000+ jobs listings in 2 days). Many additional jobs were open but not listed online.
Over 46,000 listings were for Physical Therapist Assistants and over 119,000 were for Physical Therapists.

Federal, state, and local job trends and forecasts of high-growth and high-demand jobs in this country are available through 2016, with Healthcare occupations remaining in high demand through at least 2020. In addition, Healthcare job openings are expected to reamin overly abundant through the very end of the 21st Century.
A recesion marred commercial progess in American in the 3rd and 4th QTRs of 2008 and entended through 2009. President George W. Bush spurred stimulus or "bailout" funding during this time. Under new President Barack Obama, a Stimulus Package, an Omnibus Package and other Federal Aid was distributed to big businesses such as banks, insurance companies and the auto industry. Meanwhile, large and small businesses closed their doors and workers were laid off - some having lost their retirement accounts in the economic downturn.
During 1st and 2nd Qtrs of 2009, the number of job listings on the Internet began to increase, shown by the rising curve of the graph below, based on gathering data from 1000s of job listing websites across the nation. Many other open jobs are never listed on the Internet, but online postings are a good starting point.

The US Department of Labor forecast the follwoing 10 occupations to grow most quickly from 2006 to 2016. Only the 4 job titles in bold print showed an overall increase (growth) from 2006 - 2009.

Most of these jobs are in Healthcare (human and animal), followed by Information Technology (IT), Finance, and Entertainment.
A comparison of forecast top jobs with the 1) Top Job Listings in America and the 2) Job Listings Trends 2005-2009 (above) shows a clear discrepancy through 1st or 2nd QTR 2009. Most of the forecast top jobs fluctuated widely and declined overall from 2005 - 2009. The 4 exceptions were: Personal & Home Care Aides, Home Health Aides, Medical Assistants, and Substance Abuse Counselors & Behavioral Disorder Counselors. One category that increased and then dropped off was the Computer Software Engineers group.

These hubs are always very useful. I had never heard of Indeed before reading this hub but have explored it and discovered that they have a British version. However, I have been unable to get the trending data which you have found to find out whether my chosen career in the UK is becoming more or less in demand - it seems like they don't do trending data for the UK!
Yeah that seems like it could be an option, although as you mention this depends on how many jobs are listed on the American site.

Anyone in the medical field is always in demand. Those are some "safe" careers to get.
That would be a concern. I don't know if the government is thinking in the long-term in effects. We seem never to learn from history that you need to look past the next few days and see the actual impact.
Very usefull, still I do have some doubts about longer term developments. As far as my own experience goes we always tend to think that developments will continue to go in the direction they are going now. Three recessions and three booms, and every time we made the same mistake, progress or decline in the same direction we were moving now. This also applies to demand in certain sectors, locations but sofar none of them came true.
