Top 5 Hot Best-Selling Music Genres

What's Hot?

What is the most popular type of music in America? During the last week of each year, radio stations ready their Top 100 Hits for the ending twelve months. Radio stations specializing in genres from Classical to Rock and Roll, Alternative Jazz, and Country will produce a Top 100 List for their radio stations to play on New Year's Eve, backwards from 100 to 1. Some stations even put together a Top 100 Novelty Songs.

Billboard Magazine publishes a weekly Hot 100 list, and offers a roundup of 100 or 200 each December in each of its genre charts (there must be 50).

For example the Top 10 Most Popular Hits from the Billboard Hot 100 list during the final week of 2010 are presented in the table below.

Firework - Human Spirit

Firework is a refreshing Pop number that appears in the Top 10 Listings for several music genres, as indicated on the first line of the above table. The song, tune and lyrics, are upbeat and give hope to anyone that feels different, left out, or belittled. For everyone else, it is still uplifting and gives new spark to one's own spirit.

There is hope for a country that would send this song shooting to the tops of the charts, with 60,000,000 YouTube hits by the end of 2010.

Teen suicide is a growing concern in America for several reasons, but remarkably for cyberbullying and physical abuse for GLBT identity, let along for being overweight, intelligent, or shy. There is no justification for this abuse, not Biblical, not any. Nowhere I find in the original language/literal translation of the New Testament does it say to bully or beat anyone that is different.

Lyrics - Firework

The following are some of the lyrics are from the song Firework, the third single on Katy Perry's 2010 album Teenage Dream [Clean Version].

Listen with the video above. I've no idea what's on the Explicit Version

FIREWORK by Katy Perry

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind
Wanting to start again

Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards
One blow from caving in

Do you ever feel already buried deep
Six feet under scream
But no one seems to hear a thing

Do you know that there's still a chance for you
Cause there's a spark in you

You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

Cause baby you're a firework
Come on show 'em what your worth
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
You're gonna leave 'em fallin' down-own-own

You don't have to feel like a waste of space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

BILLBOARD MAGAZINE CHARTS

According to Billboard, the hottest hits are on nearly 100 Billboard Charts. Specific genres alone cover over 50 of them and it is not possible to determine from the lineup, the 5 most popular genres in the USA. Billboard also offers a couple of Canadian top hits charts.

Looking at the ten most popular songs from the Billboard Hot 100 in the table above, beginning with Katy Perry's Pop hit, the genres of the 10 most popular songs are Pop, Hip Hop, Pop/Rock, R&B, and Dance-Rock. That makes five genres just in the first ten songs.

It's always refreshing, though very rare, when artists use their influence for something positive and good. As for my love, rock, I'm sad that not more rock songs get on the charts. Hmph.

Happy New Year! I am always looking for information on music because I can't remember who sings what. Pandora helps me, but to see it in writing also helps me a lot, that and my wife an friends who pick radio stations, and you tube videos for me to watch. Thanks.

I rely on my son to tell me his top ten for the year. But his tastes do not coincide with "top pop." His recomendations - Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today, Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest, St. Vincent - Actor. He also goes on Pitchfork alot.

Happy New Year, everybody!

Jeff, thanks for that info. Forbes has their own ideas as well, but their top and Billboard's don't match.

Patty, what a lot of great information. I listen to the radio for 50 minutes going to work and 50 minutes coming back. I'm not at all surprized that Katy Perry is on top. Great job.

I like Tool, SOAD, Rage Against the Machine, among other things. I don't listen to anyone mentioned in this article except Led Zeppelin and The Beatles. I seriously don't like everyone else listed here. However, it's a great article with alot of good information that is easily accessible.

Surprises at the Grammy's 2/13/2011. Esperanza Spalding, liked by the White House and great as a String Bass player won Best New Artist over Justin Beiber. Gaga and Katy Perry also lost a Grammy - to Arcade Fire.

Rhianna's beautiful performance in a long tatter-edge gown in front of rows of fire recalled Scarlet O'Hara at Tara and scenes from Les Miserables. Then eminem and dr dre came out to join her and a full HALF of their song was bleeped out in my viewing area. At least Rhianna gave a great number for her part.

Found a quote partially about what I thought. From MTV.com and Gil Kaufman:

"Part of the reason Arcade Fire may have landed the coup, Powers said, is that there's a new generation of people working in the music industry who came of age during the indie-rock revolution of the 1980s and 1990s and who are inspired by the band because they represent a look to the future, instead of the Grammys' more familiar tendency to reward older career artists."
