Research, Healthcare, and Technology Giants

Wake Forest is not only home of Wake Forest University, but interesting because of a number of additional aspects. As the fastest-growing city in North Carolina, Wake Forest is located at the edge of the North Carolina Research Triangle, a major center of technological development in the Southeast United States. This location resulted in 2007's Forbes, com recognition of Wake Forest as the 20th fastest-growing suburb in America.

Wake Forest, 101 years old in 2010, is about 10 miles northeast of Raleigh, the State Capital and one of three city anchors for the Research Triangle. According to BusinessWeek, the number of Wake Forest households increased at least 118% from 2000 – 2010, meaning that they more than doubled in 10 years.

The Triangle area is largely responsible for this growth, drawing talented professions and their families to the area and attracting even more business enterprises. While some communities of the Triangle experienced partial economic decline for a period in the later 2000s, they recovered and became fast-growing leaders in technologies, with additional communities joining them.

The NC Research Triangle region is anchored by Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. The larger 13-county region offers recognized effective K-12 school systems, a social and employment climate that encourages a growing population diversity in the Triangle, and a large healthcare system attached to innovative new heath-and-medical products and services developed in partnership among universities, government agencies, and private sector businesses.

Videos to the right show part of the range of interests targeted for development in the Triangle by the Research Triangle Institute alone. Dozens of other companies work on hundreds of projects in the region, creating jobs as well as technological advancements and new products.

In mid-March 2010, over 19,000 job listing were gathered across all Internet sources for the Wake Forest area, up to 25 miles from city center. Besides Wake Forest, these jobs were located in Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Research Triangle Park, Morrisville, and Clayton.

Few metropolitan areas in the US can offer as many as a Top 25 Major Employers that are listing jobs and hiring. The positions available in 2010 and likely to increase through 2020 are largely centered around IT, Retail and Wholesale Sales, Healthcare and Financial Services.

Financial Services in an interesting entry in Triangle jobs and business, one involved with business and personal finances and especially the continuing local business start up and expansion. Some of these businesses are related to the health and medical sectors, such as bio-regeneration; i.e., growing new organs and systems through the almost-magic pig-derived ECM or extracellular matrix. Produced from a pig's bladder, this powder, when placed near human tissue, will duplicate it. Television broadcasts have shown a senior citizen with a new esophagus, and research is under way to attempt to duplicate bone and other critical tissues. At the same time, patients own stem cells can be used to treat certain conditions, while the Research Triangle Institute studies chromosomal birth defects with an eye toward prevention.

The business momentum gained in the Triangle Region of 13 counties helps to make Wake Forrest a location with accessibility to 1000s of current jobs as new fields of work and new job titles emerge each year to increase the employment opportunities. Universities in the area help to protect the Triangle from from economic downturn through constant attraction of research and development partnerships in the area as well as new students and faculty.

This is a really interesting hub. Living in New York City, I always forget that there are lots of centers of information and data. Obviously there are a lot of great universities near Wake Forest, but do you think there are other factors that contribute to the density of opportunities?
