Top 20 Best Career Choices for 2010 - 2020

Employment Forecasts
© 2010, 2012. Patty Inglish.
US News and Word Reports selected 50 careers that they predict to be in the highest demand for 2010 within five Industries listed by suggested importance:
- Science and Technology,
- Healthcare,
- Education/Civic,
- Business/Finance
- Creative and Service.
Alternatively, I would have separated Education from Civic and Creative from Service careers and lists a Top 7 Industries and listed them as Science and Technology, Healthcare, Service, Civic, Business/Finance, and Creative, in order of probable highest numbers of new jobs created for 2010 when I look at trends from mid-2008 - end 2009.
These US News employment trend projections are in large part based on the US Federal Government's predictions of growth and numbers of new jobs expected for the period 2008 - 2018, released in early 2010. Note that in 2010, we are already in the third year of the decade of these forecasts.
A few US States released their own 2008 -- 2018 projections earlier, in the latter half of 2009.
The following Top 20 Careers in the list below take into account the Top 10 Rankings within each of the five Industries analyzed by US News. It also considers the importance of the jobs highlighted in their slide show of a Top 10 Overall slide show on the website and featured as a link from the SimplyHired.com Blog.
Top 20 Hot Jobs for the 2010s
- Computer Software Engineer
- Systems Analyst
- Network Administrator
- Biomedical Engineer
- X-Ray Technician
- Veterinarian
- Lab Tech
- Physical Therapist (Number one highest demand job in 2009 ) - Highest demand job in January 2010, considering all Internet vacancy postings.
- Firefighter - I would add Special Education Teacher as a tie here.
- Mediator
- Clergy
- Urban planner
- Financial Adviser/Advisor
- Actuary
- Training Specialist (in business/finance)
- Financial Analyst
- Commerical Pilot - I would substitute Multimedia Artist here, especially because it was featured in the Slide show. Further, US society is increasingly visual and the increasing number of cable TV and broadcast commercials are multimedia; museums exhibits are becoming multimedia, classrooms are becoming multimedia, etc. In addition, if pilots like 2009's hero, Sully Sullenburger, have revealed recent cuts in payroll and benefits for commercial pilots such as himself, then this employment position is probably not as fruitful going forward as projected. However, the rationale is that crop dusters and pilots willing to fly into difficult areas of the world will become more in high demand. Further, the rise of Privatized Space Flight may impact this job title, requiring more pilots and more training.
- Technical Writer
- Funeral Director
- Security System Installer
Note: within just a few days of publication, workers in a number of job titles commented on the US News and World Reports website with complaints that their particular job titles were not considered to likely grow from 2008 - 2018 qnd to be in the Top 50 Careers. These included Veterinary Technicians, Medical Technologists, Medical Assistants and several others. Some readers criticized Nurses for making more money with less education. Great job!You have put a lot of useful information in a easy to read format.
thanks
David
Good info, I used to work for biosystem/stericycle. They are all over the U.S and its dealing with removal of biohazard in hospitals. not as bad as it sounds and they are always hiring as they are a growing company.
Great helpful suggestion in a wellorganized hub. I am sure it will help a lot of people.
Nice information. It is good to have a list like this.
Technology is at the top!
Wiiiiiii =)
An interesting list - perhaps notable for its money orientation rather than 'passion'. Maybe that is our culture now?
Real estate as a career is a great option. The average Realtor in the US is 53 years old and the average home buyer is 31. This generational disconnect provides opportunity for younger agents to enter the new real estate economy.
Patty that is quite a list. I'm surprised at the funeral directors job being so high up on the list and I agree with your comment about the commercial pilots placing. Multi Media definitely seems like a better choice in my opinion too. (I've been listening to my daughters friends a lot lately who are just about ready to enter the work field this summer after finishing their three years of college).
Once again an outstanding hub
regards Zsuzsy
love to see all of this on one easy page to read! very informative and thorough, this is getting bookmarked. this is certainly a top hub!! thanks for sharing with us. :]
Teva is my favorite
Hi Patty.
Thanks for the hub.
Maybe Network Marketing hasnt hit the "tipping point"
where it is more acceptable and free of the prejudices that have built up.
The MLM industry is $110 billion world-wide and is a real job / life-style choice for anyone.
And i have to say,wow for the number of hubs you have.
Happy 2010!
a great countdown, i will definitely link to this hub
Thanks for sharing.
nice list here.
During difficult times the most precious jobs are those guaranteed by the government: not only politicians but also civil servants, teachers or scientists. The worse situation can occur at people who need to depend on other. But also freelancers could need to take some tough decisions.
Very nice read. Just on my own 2 cents and experience, if anybody has "Hollywood Dreams" (Los Angeles) do your research first cause it is sadly becoming a ghost town.
Cool hub!Thanks!
I think it's rather telling that so many of those top hiring companies are service oriented, and typically are also lower wage paying and minimally benefited. I've long said that if that's where the economy is headed, and manufacturing no longer dominates higher earnings potential, then retail stores and restaurants need to step up and pay better...
Apparently they are the only jobs left.
Wow...that is a comprehensive list! I dabble in computers and may need to rethink my career.
Very interesting list, as always Patty.
~thranax~
Cool hub!Thanks!
Wiiiiiii =)
thanks for that kind info...
Hi Patty,
What a wonderful article! This is required this time. Career is really matter of worry for a lot many.
Thanks for sharing. I am linking this to my job articles.

I used to live in New York and was a tutor i always thought new york had some of the best special ed teachers, especial after seeing the programs they had to go through at two different colleges, at St. John's University and Brooklyn College, where i went to gain my degree.
Simply informative. Love your hubs.
Great hub. I'm looking to start my career this year so it's always helpful to have information and this hub has some good advice.
Good fellows.
that heck of a detailed research... nicely written.. to me it doesn't matter what field you choose ... what matters it that ...Are you good at it or not...
HI, This is a Great Hub... I bet you're drawing many job seekers to your hubs and I'm sure they'll find many useful info here... :)
Hi, I really enjoyed reading your very through Hub, on where our Employment market is and going, I really like the Picture of a School in Brooklyn where I lived for years. Thanks for the hard work you did, helps me alot, sense I'm semi-Retired
Have recently moved to a very depressed area...long, dull story how that happened...but it seems that in this location the only places hiring, outside of trained, licensed health care facilities, are Elderly Home Care companies. I've decided this must say a lot about the predominant age of my new hometown! It's more than an hour to a larger 'real' city...am betting everyone with skills in my new town is engaged in a long commute!
Wow! This is excellent! I'm going to share this hub:)
Oh ...great hub ...great information with perfect details
Thank you :)
Wow very good posting.

Great hub
The top jobs of 2010 give a fair picture of the overall market scenario. It seems that Software is going to rule the world. The applicaton field is emerging very fast. The presentation is simply effortlessly - classic.
Wow...great info here, but a little daunting to me, an aspiring elementary education teacher. I'm in college right now (MANY years post-grade school), pursuing a degree so I can teach and am hoping there will be jobs when I finally hold my degree.
have a second income is a more secure way. job is not guaranteed, we must learn how to have multiple streams of income.
This hub is a great help.
Thanks for the cool info!
I'm always fascinated to see how things trend. I'm hoping my choices of creative writing and Reiki Master will be near the top of "great alternatives to "retirement".
Cool lens, it's interesting to know what jobs are coming and going.
Wow Occupational Therapy is number 3 on job listings for 2010. I don't really want to go back to work yet, but seems I must. At least I've got tons of listings to pick from, and everyon is open to full time, part time or prn.
Enjoyed your hub. Very useful info. I agree w/Misstan that having more than one source of income is the way to go. I call it working like a Jamaican - for they always have at least three jobs they do. Please know it is not a slur. The old way of working doesn't work anymore. We are all responsible for our own outcomes instead of being complacent and working for the 'man'. ;)
I'm just beginning with the hub pages and blogging, so we'll see how it goes. I wrote about my unemployment journey. It may be too long, but then it was like two am...
Thanks for your insight!
MissTuesdaygirl
This was a really interesting hub! And quite helpful! Thanks!
I'm surprised to see Amazon on the list - I didn't realize they were a big employer.
Very accurate depiction of lucrative jobs. Not much here in Michigan unfortunately.
I don't see "Truck Driver" on the list. With all the layoffs in the trucking industry going on right now, and with all the trucking companies going out of business, the question remains:
Why is there so much government money being offered to direct people into trucking when there aren't even enough jobs for the veteran truck drivers?
Do you smell something wrong here?
Thanks for this informative hub! I really liked the list of companies hiring!
It's great to know that these are the top career choices that we can decide on, if we want to change direction too in our lifes, because I sure would consider some of them with a little bit of training thrown in.
Cheers!
Great hub Patty!
I agree with your decision to substitute airline pilots. Sometimes these lists include jobs that are just ridiculous, I suppose to generate controversy and bring in readers. Location has a great deal to do with it as well. The my old school district hired quite a few special ed teachers in the spring of '09 and recently told them they may be laid off after the end of the year. What a lovely economy we have!
This is timely. You have chosen the right topic.Every one interested in the welfare of his brethren can pass this info.thor their email.congrats! God bless you!the comments received by you and your topic can also be made into a hubpage and circulated to one and all.
well good to know about it. Careers are ultimate end what are we looking for. Thnx.
This is great information. It is great to see a hub that gathers all of this information and places it in one place. It is interesting to compare this data with my experience in Canada, in particularly in British Columbia.
In the Vancouver, Lower Mainland area there are a large number of administrative assistants seeking employment. Although there are company's seeking to hire for these positions, many appear to be rather particular about who they hire making it an extremely competitive job market.
Nice list of areas of employment. I guess as most of us realise that to really have a secure income to support us and our family in these difficult times is create diversification of income streams.
Very detailed and informative.
Good and informative hub, I like it
Patty:
I suppose those students are going to get moved into already overburdened classes. My sister's high school math class has 61 students in it; the teacher brought in an old couch and some chairs from home for students to use.
Hi Patty,
Great information provided in this hub, with so many people weighing their options, wondering whether to drop anchor where they are or jump ship and plunge in elsewhere. Now here's a question that actually came from a 16-year-old boy; i.e. Does top hiring also mean top firing and/or quitting?(in the grown-up world, turnover?)
Very good. I was surprised to see clergy up there.
This is so interesting. Now I am gonna have to go figure out what an Urban Planner does and where they are hiring for that!
Amazing hub! So interesting!
The sad thing is that even though we *need* more special ed. teachers, Norah's' right, the schools around aren't hiring them. Heck its a down right fight just to even get your kid into a special ed. class - at least when I was helping parents of autistic kids in Texas. All the special ed. teachers I knew were subbing to make money since the school systems wouldn't hire and pay them. I guess someone still thinks we need more guns instead...
Great hub, very informative.
A lot of great options here. Nice hub.
Hello Patti, I noticed that you listed Technical Writer as #18 (right next to Funeral Director at 19) in your list of fastest growing professions. I have been a technical writer for more than 10 years and back in September of '09, it took me 3 months to get a job. Just some trivia to add to your well thought out article. Also, see my article on Accidental Technical Writer (lists hiring companies) on thewriteword on Hubpages.
nice information. I'll bookmark this one.
Great article mate, very interesting but what about dentists lol - Cheers
I like this note. Keep it going.
Such an awesome HUB; thumbs up! Glad that my job is also within the top 20!! Woohoo
An informative topic for everyone. Thanks for sharing this resource
Here's a interesting website that I came across, for Jobseekers and Job Holders find jobs with Category wise not advertised on other boards

Thanking you in Advance

Great information to help people decide career paths. I have bookmarked this to show to my son. He wants to go back to school to certify as a physical trainer (could be a good tie-in for a physical therapist occupation) He loves training and working out. My last ROP teacher told me there would be alot of jobs in the visual communications fields in the future - I imagine exactly for the reasons you listed here in the hub. Thumbs up and thanks for info Patty!
that's cool!
Wow, this article was very informative for a lot of people. I like that you discussed reasons, and then supported them with graphs.
Young adults can gain a lot from this.
Software engineers number 1. I believe it, there is such a high demand for these jobs.
Patti, your job hubs are so helpful to many people. I consider you a gem in the HubPages community... best to you as always!
Informative and helpfull.. giving the wide perspective to all.. thank you for yoor great hub.
I work in Emergency at Cardiac/Trauma center. Staff shortages at times reach dangerous levels. Great read, great hub! Thanks
Wow! What a thorough Hub! I know in Michigan, where the unemployment level is one of the highest in the country, medical related jobs are still the hot thing. Information Technology is in second place.
i like the information cheers was very helpful
Excellent......time demanding hub......it will help to build a job oriented carrer.
Really a valuable information. Thanks for posting
This is great for kids in college looking for careers!
Great analysis, very valuable indeed
Very interesting! Great article, you did good research.
Great hub! It's nice to see companies are hiring.
wow! very good and thorough post!!
I think I will be emailing you when I finish my law degree...
I would agree with the retail bit that was mentioned. it is picking up quickly around here. Retail help needed everywhere!
Network Marketing will be on there soon.
Top 20 Hot Jobs for 2010
1.Computer Software Engineer
here I'm :D
Any job that allows you to work remotely without having to drag yourself into an office whilst fighting through traffic is a sure candidate for a top 20 job.
Wow! Very detailed forecast. Great hub.
you have a great hub here! have to give it up! really helpful because I am planning on becoming a teacher and I will be certified in special ed thanx a lot. you were helpful!
what amazing article
Great hub! Excellent research and detailed lists.
Very Informative. Thanks for the info!
Very informativ...Thanks for all you do!
Great Hub
Interesting. In Australia we are the "green industries" such as solar power are the ones that are exploding due to puplic policy and government funding
Very cool article. Thank god im studying to become a software engineer :)
I am in Australia, with a son in Uni learning to be a teacher. Like America, teaching has a big future here, so I am hoping he will always have work. He will probably not teach after graduation. There are so many good jobs that pay better than teaching he can do, but having the capacity to teach is an important back-up for him. I believe the jobs here are similar to America's list. The job ops are great here with almost full employment.
I would have guessed health care would have been number one in this economy. I know nurses can pick about any job they want right now.
Hi Patty,
Happy job hunting!
nice Useful hub thanks.
Nice hub! This has given me some inspiration :)
Remember to pursue something you will enjoy or you will be miserable. Money isn't the only factor. Great hub, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the information Patty Inglish! This will be much of help for others who needs to have jobs. I have noticed that the world of internet technology will still dominate the jobsearch areas. As we all know, there is a good possibility of making money online. All there is needed is a laptop and an internet then we could start earning.
Really helpful information!
I appreciate you shared this study in detail, it helped me understand more about my career in my the Industry I work in. Thanks!
Thanks for such a detailed list.
Its was interesting to see pilots in the list, I hope your prediction is correct with regards to increased space flights. Hopefully it will not be long before it is affordable for more of us.
Would love to take a trip to space.
im so glad im on the top one...hehe Computer Software Engineer.
By the way tnx for this list. its so great.
nice compilation.
awesome!
you always make reading your articles so engaging Patty thank you! Barbara b
Wow What a Hub. Am passing this info along to my daughter. Thank you for publishing.
An awesome hub and with great comprehensive detail. Rated it up. Thanks for sharing will come handy and hence bookmarking this.
This is a great list! I know a couple of people who are unemployed and looking to retrain in a field that they will be able to find a job. I will forward this along.
Great info and well structered hub.
Found this article to be very useful. Thanks for writing it.
I never would have guessed that Computer Software Engineer would be number one.
Well, projections and statistics are necessary and I appreciate this opportunity to take a look. It will be interesting to see the movement that the healthcare industry will take as workers are always needed in this arena. After all, even computer engineers at some point will need medical care. I look forward to seeing where this leads. Voted-up/rated.
Hm... It's quite strange that in the times of this crisis the Financial Analyst is only on 16th place. I think almost every of the more or less big companies needs one, because the economic situation is constantly changing.
I found this information to be very interesting and useful. Finding the right career, or a job in general is never an easy thing to do. By knowing what companies are hiring in your area it can give you a head start on knowing exactly where to be looking. Also, you never know when something in your industry might open up, so make sure to always keep an eye out.
Thanks for sharing this information. I'm going to pass it along to my oldest child who will be entering the work force soon.
Thorough report, thanks! Passing this along to adult kids seeking jobs.
I'm glad to see Veterinarian is at #6. Both my parents are Veterinarians and they love their job. I wish I would have followed that path.
Good info here. Some of the top positions puzzled me, considering our economy at the moment, but this was real interesting. Thanks!
Great hub, I hope that who are currently seeking for a job will get here some ideas on where to work or for how to further educate themselves.
I thought with the rise of the unemployment rate and the increase in internet use. That home based businesses would be in the top 50. As I understand it millions of people are on line making a living. Could home based internet businesses be in the next 50?
I'm sort of surprised to see Java Developers on this list. I sort of thought Java was a dying thing. Surprised I don't see iPhone software devs on the list!
Well detailed and highly informative.
Very interesting hub. I thought number 19, Funeral Director, was interesting. Do people pick this as a career? Or is this a family inherited career?
Very interesting information here. Thanks.
excellent hub page - cool jobs and trends for the future
Excellent. Thanks for the post!
It's good to see that software engineers are near the top. And, very informative hub indeed.
This is awesome! I'm right in the middle of changing jobs in Atlanta, GA (which is one of the highest paying markets thankfully). This is will really help me create a decision calculus when determining what I want to do.
I enjoyed this hub, though I must say it is a bit disorienting to read the various "Top Jobs" lists, as they all seem to say different things. Still, good info.
Very nice stats.
Ill remain very interested in writing for now, though :)
Thanks for the hub!
Great info and stats!!!!... One of my favorite topics to study and research. I love the graphs and comparisons.
Thank You.
I feel bad that after reading all the information, following the links and looking at the graphs that the only thought I can contribute is:
I'm betting telemarketing careers would be on the bottom ten list, if one were to make one.
Now I just need to figure out how to break into one of those industries. Thanks for the very thorough hub.
I like your info, as number 18 of your hot job's list is Technical writers. Now that I've completed my education and we've just slipped into 2011, did I miss the boat? I sure hope not.
This is good info. Thanks for compiling it to share.
Great info here! Thanks for the great hub!
I'm surprised to see that so many retail operations are hiring. With the economic troubles, I would think that stores would be on the downturn. Perhaps Food Lion is hiring because their prices are low. I know our local grocery store has been cutting hours and laying people off.
Clergy and Funeral Director in the top 20 jobs for 2010, that’s certainly two I wouldn’t have thought of. Nice hub!
I'm betting computer software engineers are going to be in demand for a very long time.
good job! you have so much inofrmation!
More scope looks only into the science field. I dunno when will other fields also come into the picture.
Especially with how fast technology and things on the internet are changing, it’s hard not to get caught up. Thanks, and all the best to you!
A lot of info up here .. but what surprised me the most was that the post of technical writer was at the 17th position.
I don't think think technical writer will be much in demand as now as days most of technical writing is done by the guys who created the stuff
Thanks this is great information. I was surprised by the travel sector. I had no idea!
Good list of companies. I applied for most of these.

Good morning, Patty Inglish. Of the top hiring companies, retail stores are near the top. What ever happened to the software and computer places - especially in Florida, California, and New York? You do list in the top 20 Excel Data, Cybercoders, and Microsoft. Thanks for this fine roundup of hiring and jobs in the U.S. Don White
