Top 15 Hot Jobs in Tuskegee

Tuskegee, Alabama has not appeared on the list of Top 20 College Towns in America, but my opinion is that it should be included, because of its famous school, Tuskegee University (formerly Tuskegee Institute), and because of the history of the area. This is evident in the Tuskegee National Historic Site as well as in museums, cultural institutions, and other venues in the city.

Not only is the city home to the renowned Tuskegee University, but it has also enjoyed a 710% increase in job listings from April 2008 - November 2009. Even during a recession, the higher education complex in the city joins forces with business and government in order to create new jobs and new training opportunities for Americans that need work. this tradition dates back to 1895, when Tuskegee Institutes's famed Booker T. Washington partnered with several Northern philanthropists and businessmen for the betterment of education and employment in the South, Men that joined Washington in this included Mr. Julius Rosenwald, who was the head of Sears, Roebuck and Company at the time. Henry Rogers was the head of Standard Oil. Women contributed as well, Anna T. Jeanes of Philadelphia giving Washington $1,000,000 for schools in 1907.

Another Tuskegee Institute man, George Washington Carver, also contributed tot eh trend of education and jobs with hundreds of inventions from the agricultural raw materials of peanuts and sweet potatoes.

How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.

Tuskegee is located in Macon County, Alabama, approximately 19 miles southwest from Auburn, a city that is included on the Forbes.com Top 20 College Town list. With a population of about 12,000 people, Tuskegee might be considered a suburb of Auburn, which has a population of over 56,000.

Tuskegee is also at the southwest tip of the Tuskegee National Forest, about 50 miles west of Columbus, Georgia and approximately 40 miles east of Montgomery, Alabama. It has its own airport 4 miles to the north, Moton Field International Airport. On the east side of the city is the large City Lake and to the west is the Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site (see link above). The city receives over 500,000 tourists per year and is increasing this number.

Tuskegee University- This is the premier historical education institution of the area. The first president, Dr. Booker T. Washington, opened it as the Normal School for Colored Teachers on Independence Day - July 4, 1881. Agricultural and Environmental departments are active in sustainability and creation of green jobs. Several other colleges join the trend toward job creation and support an active college athletics program as well. This is a tourist and historic traveler's attraction as well as a university.

The 332d Fighter Group of the US Army Air Corps.Members of this groups are the Tuskegee Airmen, legends of the 20th Century and World War II.

In the US Armed Forces, these men were pilots that served as escorts to American Flying Fortresses and other aircraft, having never lost a single plane that they escorted. Few groups of military personnel in WWII cold make a similar claim. Survivors from this squadron are still sought by the US Federal Government in order to award them commendations and medals that they may not have - likely did not receive for their achievements over 60 years ago.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to meet any of the Tuskegee Airmen, but I did work with an African American Navy Veteran of WWII that served on a submarine manned by an all-white crew besides himself. He had many interesting stories to tell and enjoyed his time on board the sub, except for the fact that he was required to have separate quarters from whites and slept in a type of boiler room below desks. When I knew him, he was a civilian retiree that became a security guard, still proud to wear a uniform.
