Fast Growing Houston Suburb

Missouri City is located approximate 20 minutes to the southwest of Houston by highway near I-10, Sam Houston Tollway, and State Highway 59; and on US Highway 90.

Around 1890, a Houston real estate developer bought land in what is now Missouri City with a partner and named it after the State of Missouri to promote business up in St. Louis. The railroads had come through in the 1850s, but a depot did not appear until after 1900. Sugarcane was grown near the city and was shipped by rail to Sugar Land nearby to the west. Other local agriculture included cotton, corn, and cattle. In the 1920s, Oil, natural gas, and salt were discovered and opened up extraction and manufacturing as an industry.

It appears on the 2010 list of 100 Best Cities to Live in America, as constructed by CNNMoney.com.With a suburban population of 75,000, the city is continue to grow by virtue of a new business park that was planned to increased commercial and with it, residential numbers. Because of all this added to other features such as a high quality school system and high ratings for safety and affordability in housing, the areas has access to nearly 67,000 jobs during pre-holiday autumn 2010.

The Houston Business Journal presented Missouri City with the magazine's 2010 Landmark Award for "Community Impact" to recognize its development of the Quail Valley Parks Project. Quail Valley is a master-planned community, along with Riverstone, that is designed, maintained, and improved for community benefit that incudes a high standard of living and sustainability. In 2009, the Congressional Quarterly gave Missouri City a ranking of Number 8 Safest City in the USA.

Transportation

Missouri City has no mass transit services inside its borders. Houston METRO operates a Park and Ride on the Sam Houston Tollway (Highway 90A) that carries people into Houston and to large medical centers in the area.

Missouri City could benefit from additional funding to boost mass transit capabilities. A regional airport is located in Sugar Land (www.flysgr.com).

In the graph below, we see that a major rise in job vacancies occurred in July 2010 and dispapeared.

Sugar Land, Texas

This city was named for the fact that it began as an 1800s sugar plantation in Texas. This suburban neighbor of Missouri City is a fast growing city today and Sugar Land is approximately 9 miles west of Missouri City. It offers a large number of job vacancies and a regional airport in the Southwest Houston Metro Area. Larger than Missouri City, its population is over 84,500 residents nd in 2008, 2009, and 2010, it was named a Community of Respect® by the Anti-Defamation League for its stance advocating diversity.

The city embraces sustainability and contains five large upscale master-planned communities with residential, commercial, and business properties, green spaces, parks, trails, and lakes. Dozens of festivals and special events are held in Sugar Land and a new ball park is under consideration. It has come a long way from its sugar plantation history.

Hi Patty - I enjoyed reading your article about Missouri City, Texas, Sugar Land, and the general area close to Houston, Texas. A person could be deceived a bit by looking at the map in the article. Interstate Highway 10 (I-10) which runs east and west through Houston is actually well to the north of Missouri City. Missouri City, on the other hand, is located close to Houston on the east-west highway, Alternate-90, as is Sugar Land.

It might also be mentioned that "Kansas City," Harry Truman's old stomping ground, is not in Texas - although many of us here look back with fondness to that remarkable plain man who became a really great U.S. president - one that Missouri City would be proud to remember as its close-by neighbor were that so.

You are exactly correct, though, in citing Missouri City as a good place to work and to live. It is also fun to visit. The welcome mat is always out for folks who enjoy good places and good people.
