City of Guelph
A reader asked about the meat packing business in Ontario related to the permanent, part-time, seasonal, and teen employment options available. While investigating the meat packing business, I was impressed with the business scene and lifestyle available in this city. It is on my short list of Ontario cites to explore as soon as possible.
Guelph (pronounced gwelf ), Ontario (pop. reported at 118,000 in 2010) is an interesting city about 61km or 38 miles to the west of Toronto, close enough to be considered a suburb of the Greater Toronto Area and certainly a neighbor that is growing in celebrity, new business, and increasing jobs. In 2008, Canadian Business Online named Guelph one of the Best Places to Live In Canada. A low crime rate, very clean environment, and higher standard of living that other cities netted Guelph its ongoing rating as a top city for living in the nation.
In the 2010s
A local company, Biorem Inc., reported in June 2010 that it had increased business substantial with new accounts. This enterprise is an air pollution cleanup company. It reported accepting two new accounts for Smell Control Systems that added up to a total of $2,300,000 in new revenue.

Guelph's Innovation District -- on June 30, 2010 the provincial government and the City of Guelph signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to boost the local economy and create jobs through developments in the Guelph Innovation District. Her Worship Karen Farbridge, Mayor of Guelph points out the advantages of this to 5000 residents and up to 10,000 jobs within a greener economy, as indicated in the material at the embedded link. Historical Contexts
In Flanders Field
The John McCrae House (b. 1858 and doctor, soldier, and author of In Flanders Fields, commemorating a 1915 battlefield) is a member of the Guelph Museums group and holds an annual reenactment of a skirmish occurring at this site earlier, during the War of 1812. The history of the Guelph area goes very well with the work of another, British, author of that war's history, Graham Sclater, who has written Hatred is the Key concerning the fates of 10,000 Americans held in UK's Dartmoor Depot prison.
Summer afternoon teas and evening piping concerts are also held at the installation.
Unique Railroad History
Guelph was the first city in the province and the nation to have its own federally chartered railroad system. it is still the only community in Canada to have a federally chartered rail line. This is the Guelph Junction Railway and its 24 miles of track, located also at this well done website: GJR Operators Web pages.
University of Guelph
Guelph is known as Canada's Technology Triangle, with the help of its colleges and universities in the market area. This designation is comparable in name, function, and results to the Research Triangle in the US Carolinas.
The University of Guelph is a respected facility that offers free lectures by such celebrity writers, directors, and filmmakers such as the well known Arctic educator, John Houston. Ongoing critical research at the university includes cancer breakthroughs, environmental conservation, and sustainability of clean groundwater. University contact information:

Downtown Guelph
The Downtown area of this city is a redeveloped and changing landscape of culture, arts, and interesting dining establishments. A Friday noon concert agenda is held in warmer seasons, and various celebrations fine a perfect venue downtown. Street performers participate in a benefit for children affected by war in an event known as Busking for Change [http://audioblood.com/warchild/bfcguelph.html has offered a link to the event in the past] . Street performing is fascinating personally, since we have little of it in my town.
An innovation downtown is the incorporating of a non-profit called 10 Carden Street, located across the way form the City Hall building. Its goal is to provide a community traffic and activity hub for non-profit groups, for-profit businesses, and individuals that seek shared, affordable space.
Just about any type of product or service is available in Downtown Guelph and transportationis excellent, including the rail system, a Greyhound Bus service, taxis, and delivery vehicles as well as walkable sidewalks and pathways.
In order to increase the local economy, a downtown pilot program called Open for Business is underway downtown. It consists, since 2008, of training small business owners in how to effectively survive disasters and reopen with the minimum of obstacles and delay. Guelph is the very first city in all of Canada to initiate this program, unique in North America.

Thank you, Patty, to write such an informative hub. I have been in Toronto but have not seen anything else of Canada. I think it is a wonderful country.
I love Guelph, I'm happy to be a country mouse but if I were to move to a city it would definitely be Guelph again. The university of Guelph is also one of the leaders in Agriculture and Environment Sciences along with Veterinary Medicine... and my most favorite place on earth... the library, it is to die for... wow, once I enter the world stops for me. I have on numerous times gone in first thing in the morning and not surfaced till late evening time.
Fabulous hub Patty about one of my favorite cities
hope you're well
kindest regards Zsuzsy
I would be at fault if I were not to comment on your super Hub about my city! The way the Church of Our Lady towers over our skyline echoes the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland and the used bookstore Macondo's on Carden Street (which you mentioned above) is the place to find great books any time of the year. Thanks for highlighting us for the world Patty.
I used to live in Guelph for 4 years, it is a nice place to live.
Guelph is near Canada's Technology Triangle (Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge), but not included in the triangle.
I have never been to Canada but this hub made me to feel to visit it. Great job, thanks for sharing!
