Growing Suburbs

In mid-summer 2010, CNNMoney.com and Money magazine published their yearly list of 100 Best Places to Live in America. While the Top 10 - 20 included past high ranking cities from the current Top 100, some other intriguing cities deserve further review.

One of these interesting cities is Carmel, Indiana, a thriving suburb of Indianapolis that is much like Fishers and slotted at #14 among the Top 100. Why is Carmel interesting?

Beginning in Bethlehem

During Andrew Jackson's Presidency, a group of four men joined to lay out a town they named the Town of Bethlehem in the spring of 1837. It contained only 14 plots of land in what was Delaware and Miami Nation territory and would eventually become Carmel in 1874 after the American Civil War. Various stores and a post office were built from 1837 - 1874, but the railroads did not come through until 1882 and electricity went town-wide in 1904, the year of the St. Louis World's Fair. By 2007, the census was about 69,000 people in all.

In the 2000s, a number of improvements and additions to Carmel, including residences and new business, were successfully implemented and in 2010, the town was recognized as one of the best places to live in the country.

Carmel is located just north of the I-465 beltway around Indianapolis, close to all the action of the metropolis and a few miles to the west of Fishers IN, another recognized fast-growing suburb of Indianapolis, birthplace of David Letterman and the Indianapolis 500. If that is not sufficiently exciting, Carmel has several of its own Facebook pages - see the links to Civic Square below).

The entire area to the north of Indianapolis seems to be developing and growing quickly to become very convenient and resident-friendly. Several golf courses are close and accessible and the Merchant Square Mall is located in Carmel between two of them: Mohawk Hills to the north and Woodland to the south, with Lake Woodland less than a mile to the east o fit.

CarmelCan! - Community Volunteers

Carmel CAN! is a program for volunteer services established by the Mayor to organize projects and staffing; and to recognize the contributions of the many Carmel volunteers. This this way, it is easy to match volunteer positions and projects with eager volunteers. Every month around the calendar, volunteers participate in community events or within community organizations and their efforts are showcased in a monthly news show called "Connecting with Carmel" on the Carmel Government TV Channel 16, in the Carmel Newsletter, and on th ecity web pages. Volunteer activities include Hamilton County projects, seasonal, year-around projects, and special events.

Carmel Attractions

Carmel Civic Square

The town square in Carmel is used for annual and special events and festivals in an expansion of well-maintained greenspace. However, it is also the site of city government. Several large and attractive buildings make the square look like a picture postcard.

Ground breaking took place for the Carmel Civic Square in 1986 and the new square became a favorite place for teenagers to hang out. They had their own version of "tag" -CB tag, as in CB radio - and even played an annual softball game. Dozens of people are having fun on Facebook, sharing their CD handles.

Today, the square is used for picnics, concerts, and other special events. Tourists can visit the City Hall, firehouse, gazebo and other structures. A dozen restaurants are located near the square, along with a dozen hotels. An ice rink, performance art theaters, a day spa, and several other parks fill the surrounding landscape. Nearby, Carmel City Center in downtown is a pedestrian-friendly inner village with eye catching architecture, several piazzas, green spaces, and water features -- 1,000,000 square feet of shops, entertainment, office space, and residences.
