98I believe that the following Top 10 List of Global Concerns are vital in the 21st century.
1) Individual Abuse of Humans by Humans
I choose this as NUMBER ONE, because it hits millions of individual men and woman, directly, every day of their lives.
Abuse and bullyism are ramplant in America and all over the world. It is my opinion that this is the single worst problem globally, because abuse not only can damage the body, but also the minds, emotions, and spirits of targets of abuse. It's no iuse telling them to "just leave", because most of them are psychologically unable to leave. Some are physically unable to do so.
In some foreign countries, there is not even any help to be had from social agencies. In America, some of the funding that supports domestic vioence treatment centers and refuges and anti-bully programming was cut during the last few years of the GW Bush adminstration.
Abuse is a slow death, day by day for decades. I have known women that were abused growing up who went on to to be abused in thier marriages for 60 more years. Thus, that is around 80 years of constant abuse. I have seen this happen to men as well. Think of how miserable a life that was - wanting to die, but not being able to do so; wanting freedom, but not beliving it exists.
Abuse occurs in all of these aspects: verbal, physical, mental/psychological, sexual, gender, financial, spiritual, medical, and others.

2) Genocide
When people begin killing their own species en masse - other people - something is wrong. However, no matter what is wrong, people should not be killing groups of other people.
Who has killed whom? Here are just a few examples:
European Explorers killed Indigenous Peoples in the Western Hemisphere, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and elsewhere.
Nazi death camps and military forces killed Jews, Blacks, and Gays.
In the 19th Century, a Chinese dynasty killed millions of Muslims.
In Sudan in the 20th and 21st Centuries, Africans have been continually killed, and at least their arms chopped off at the shoulders, for declaring themselves to be Christians.
Year 2005 - The Armenian Genoicide was recognized as offical and real by the US.
There are many others, since recorded history began, including in the Old testament.
ADVOCATE ORGANIZATIONS
3) Economic Manipulation and False Shortages
Manipulating markets and commodities in such a way as to create shortages that drive prices higher certianly increase sales and profits, but also lead to deaths of innocent people.
it is too difficult to determine which shortages are real and which are contrived.
In the first decade of the 21st century, the media have declared a global food shortage. At the same time, it was reported Ohio holds 6 years' worth of corn in siles and cound not store the 2007 crop.
In the 1950s, tons of coffee and whole milk were dumped into the Gul of Mexico in order to drive prices up in stores and create higher sales and profits.
Foolish waste is wrong, but purposeful waste is immoral.

Nations and people have the right to defend themselves, but not all wars are just.
There is always a war someplace on the planet. Somewhere, someone is fighting about properties and power.

5) Oil
Oil as a fuel and as a base for many products is a problem far beyond Global Warming. Even if there were no Global Warming, oil would be a problem, because it is far too expensive and wars are fought over it.
Most of what we do with oil might even be done with peanuts, according to George Washington Carver's hundreds of developments that created products from this one plant. An Indian car runs on compressed air.
The media has broadcast that a food shortage has occurred, because corn is being diverted to the ethanol manufacturing process to replace oil-based fuels. The hint is that we should go back to relying on oil. However, it is not the FOOD part of the corn that is neccesarily used in the process of ethanol. Documentary films have made that clear.
Aside from this, a plant in Texas makes actual oil from compressed turkey and chicken parts. Therefore, some oil shortages may be artificial.

6) Overpopulation
HAVE WE OUTLIVED OUR SUSTAINABILITY AS A PEOPLE AND PLANET?
Earth is projected to max out in population able to be supported, between 2020 To 2029, if nothing changes. Some scientists suggest we off load to Mars.
The planet Earth will only support a limited number of people. That is true for any planet and any ecosystem.
Becuase of this, The Mars Society is pushing harder for exploration and settement of Mars. The US has already agreed to venture back to the moon, in hopes of building base colonies there from which to push off and mine the asteroid belt between Earth and Mars for raw materials. Plans for medical colonies on the moon for patients with unctrollable high blood pressure have also been considered, becuase the lower gravity wouldhelp them. In the book The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, the moon was a penal colony.
Circumstances on earth are such that the continents are becoming overpopulated in the 21st century. Some nations are losing people to other nations, because resources and room are running short - just as in the 1600s when Native Americans migrated eastward from the US West Coast in search of resources.
China has relaxed some of its stringent population control efforts in an attempt to help its Indigenous peoples grow. The country is a large population base that will begin to grow a bit faster as a result.
The Effects of Overpopulation are Many:

- Food and water runs short
- Saniation processes become bogged down
- Infant mortality often rises
- The youngest and oldest members of society are often neglected and the resources fought over by the middle groups. In primitive societies, they have been starved, been ritually killed, or simply died. This is occurring among industrialized nations in the 21st century.
- Signs of abuse become more evident
- Lack of enough job openings for work-aged people
- Crime increases - both property and personal

7) Misinformation
With the popularization of the Internet and broadcast media, the proliferation of misinformation, falsehoods, and harmful myths has reached alarming proportions. Already mentioned above in this article are such things as false shortages and economic manipulations, along with misinformation that corn kernels are always used in ethanol production.
Education is important, because it teaches individuals to use critical thinking and problem solving skills in order to debunk falsehoods and find the truth. Unfortunately, this is not happening often enough. The media may spin certain information to achieve acceptance by the masses, even if the information is inaccurate -- Some historians explain that in the 1950s-1960s, the American people were straightforwardly lied to, but in the 2000s, they are talked into believing what some media broadcasters wish them to believe. Some people just don't watch TV news any more and avoid the situation. Some citizens even point to Presidents Bill Clinton and GW Bush as the first Internet Presidents as reasons to avoid technology altogether.

8) Worldwide Immigration
My Hub Pages article on global populations (Global Warming Causes Human Migration) indicates that immigration is becong a problem globally. Not only are Mexican citizens and others coming into USA through inadequately controlled borders, but large groups of people are moving form one nation into another all over the world, in search of better resources and better living conditions.
Tightening travel regulations are causing increasing difficulties in entering and leaving the USA. A passport will be required for US citizens to leave and re-enter, even from Canada and Mexico. Passposrts create a financial hardhsip for some indidivuals, as do the alternative travel ID cards or passes for sale by the government.
The plight of immigration is well documented in the film, The Visitor (2007).

10) Consumerism and Trash
Purposeful waste is unnecessary. Unfortunately, some individuals purposefully waste resources and create trash as a sort of entertainment or recreational pursuit. Others do not yet realize the harm in excessive waste and unnecessary trash, and still others probably do not care. The fact is, extra waste is ugly and expensive - it drives prices up and takes more man hours to discard.
My specific annoyance is those folks that create trash and litter in the expectatioon that others will clean up after them. Be that as it may, not only do we have a new plastic continent in the Pacific Ocean, made up of plastic trash, but some of the streets in Chinese cities are so littlered with plastic bags, that one cannot see the sidewalks. Animals in Alaska are beign strangled by plastic trash discarded 10,000 miles away. A few American cities have begun to charge for plastic bags at the grocery and other cities have outlawed these bags altogether.
A reduction in trash and an assocaited increase in green living would increase the quality of life for large numbers of people.

For the most part, I think you should have put overpopulation as #1, as everything else seems to emerge from that: resource problems, social problems, etc. I'm still amazed that it wasn't until the early-19th century that world population hit 1 billion. In 1900, it stood at about 1.6 billion. Now, barely 100 years on, it's over 6.5 billion. That's just insane. No wonder we're having problems.

Wow. When I posted the request I thought I'd get something a little briefer. :) Awesome job and you even kept the political ranting out of it!
I'm far more hopeful about the future than you seem to be. Population, for example - while there has to be a limit somewhere, that limit is continually pushed back. People have been predicitnig Doom from over-population for some time now.
Obviously, there is a finite cap, just as there is with oil. Since the earth has a finite amount of volume there *must* be a cap on the amount of available oil. We'll hit that cap at some point. When? Who knows?
Politics complicates the population issue even more.
I think you're dead on about genocide, abuse, terrorism, etc. All of these come about from the cultural environment in which people are raised. If you're raised in an anvironment where women are seen as little more than chattle, for example, you won't see your treatment of them as abuse.
So how does one fix *that?*
I think you hit the immigration nail on the head. "Better living conditions." It has nothign to do with warming and everything to do with wanting a better life. I understand that as Mexico's economic condition improves it's having a positive effect on the amount of immigration into the US.
It's a bigger issue when the country that these people come into is unwilling to stick to its own culture and standards and kowtows too much to the demands of the immigrants. For example, I think the clash between Muslim immigrants and European culture is going to get ugly in not so many years. Freedom of speech over there is already gone.
I disagree the we posess the knowledge to deal with all of these problems since my knowledge of how it should be dealth with with differ greatly from yours. Fundamentalist Islamics have a very clear idea of how to fix the world's problems, just as do the communists and libertarian capitalists and any other group you care to name.
Some people lean to governmental solutions to fix everything, including giving the UN more power. Personally, I think that will make everything much worse.
Still, you know what makes your list especially good? Unlike global warming/cooling people can actually do something about the your issues, even on a small scale.
As for the thought that humans are parasites on this Earth or that, "There is something very evil and very selfish in a human mind..." well, I think that's very wrong. It reminds me of the religious types who believe that we're born evil and must follow a certain path, their path, to have any hope of redemption.

Gems4friends - I think a lot of people can start behaving "evilly" when pressed by having too many other people around with too few resources. Lots of tension and survival mode going on.
As for doing things to aid these situations - let's Ohio start by giving away that 6 years worth of corn we have piled up. what did we do with the 2007 crop? We didn't see it in the stores that I recall. 2 summers ago, corn was 10 cents an ear in the summer and 25 cents the rest of the year . Right now, it's 50 - 60 cents per ear already.
War is one way of reducing populations - It certainly did so in the Viet Nam Conflict era and moreso in WWII. Natural caststrophes and epidemics reduce populations as well. Lots of events and circumstances do. It will take larger-scale events to reduce a geomtrically-proportional increase in population as we have now. It probably will happen, too.

I strongly believe, we possess absolutely all knowledge needed for solving most problems mentioned in this hub (natural and social sciences, technologies, history and statistics)

Well, I will try to 'make it' in more practical way, to be easier to understand my point. Have you ever walked through the country, where war is a sheer reality? Have you ever seen a real genocide or a real war? I have seen them, only not once. I have seen so terrible crimes committed by humans, that I better not to describe them here in details. Massacred babies, children, pregnant women, ... Do you think, that it had been easier to me because of my medical profession to simply forget all those thousands of killed totally innocent civilians? How you would then describe such very well premeditated criminal activities?
That's certainly a lot of experience and testimony to the horrors of war, solarshingles. It's dreadful.
I believe, the education plus professionalisation (a process of getting more specialized practical skills and knowledge) is the most important for actively addressing all problems described in this so well thought and well written hub.
Internet has given humanity a truly wonderful tool for communication, exchange of ideas, experiences, education, cooperation, and so much more. Internet and its free knowledge basis have enormously cut costs for basic education and reaching also the most remote parts of this planet. Satellite data communication and PC computers are the simplest and far the cheapest basic tools for this.
I think, there should be an organized 'force', considering world society (such as for example an American Army, which should prevent individual leaders - dictators, who are in any way endangering human lives, open and free education, and regular development of human mind in their local society.
The common problem, which arises with such a force is, that there is a high danger to be misused by its leaders (as there is the case in almost all wars after the WWII, even now in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, etc. And again, there is no chances to establish long term peace in these 'war lords' areas, until most of the population there is not much, much better educated and skilled. The other option, beside education-professionalization is to leave those nations just to themselves and watch from a distance, how they are going through different forms of civilization, starting from tribal order, feudalism, early capitalism, communism, democracy, if ever. There are always going to be constant wars and fighting involved, if we choose this 'lazes fare' option - free trade and non-interference).
Reaching a 'critical mass of education' and good upbringing is maybe, the best answer.

Having been in a war I can tell you there is nothing "glorious" about it. it is an experience that haunts you all your life, if you manage to survive intact. I was not seriously wounded, but many friends were. Others lost their lives. And for what? Eventually, we realized that Viet Nam would get along better without our interference, and all the lives we (and they!) sacrificed were for naught.
Also, Stalinist Russia murdered millions, starved other millions, as did Pol Pot of Cambodia, just to add a few other atrocity-mongers to your list. Idi Amin killed tens of thousands, and would have murdered yet more if he had had the chance.
Today on the streets of America rival gangs murder each other and innocent bystanders. Recently in Chicago we have had a spate of gang-related killings. I know in L.A., N.Y and many other cities gang violence is up. When people feel isolated from others, they form groups to protect themselves.
Gangs are often surrogate "families" for members, who have often been abandoned by society & birth family.
This is one area in which I agree that churches and private organizations can do wonders. NGO's and churches can often act swiftly, much more so than governments seem to do. It is good to see that some churches are indeed stepping up to their social responsibilities.

Overpopulation is certainly a gateway to at least parts of all the other Concerns. However, I recall that abuse has been perpetuated for at least 6,000 years or more - in slavery, for one example. Overpoplation did not, I think cause this. How about abusive control over the 13 colonies by the British Crown? How about abuse of Indigenous individuals by a few explorers? How about abuse of one spouse to another if either sex? That's all about power. But, the anxiety and pressure of too many people in one place will exacerbate it.

I haven't, I don't intend to, and I have a lot of respect for those of you who do. My point was simply that if humankind was born evil then you and Patti wouldn't be here. But you're absolutely right. Some pretty horrible things have been done by people to people.
I don't think I understand your comment about a world force. Iraq and Afganistan are going about as well as any such force could manage, without ten times the troops, and while I strongly support that mission I seem to be in a small minority. Actually, I kindof agree in principle, which is why I don't think I understand you.

Hi Chef, I don't have any idea what the "right thing" would have been regarding Vietnam, but abandoning it was was pretty obviously (in my world, anyway) the wrong thing. Same with Iraq. By the way, thank you for your service.
Patti, when I was into Martial Arts (and I'm in awe of your accomplishments there) several parents told us that the training had done wonderful things for their kids, in terms of behavior, discipline, fewer fights, etc. I'm sure your experiences in that area are *far* beyond mine.What are your thoughts on why that happens? Is there anything there that can be applied more globally?

The implementation of these solutions are surpressed by the big powers who want to keep their monopoly etc. i.e. I was told 28-30 years ago when I was looking into building a windmill for selfpower, that it was against the law. By the right thing I mean that we were not there to win, and the government we supported was as corrupt as that of Saddam Hussein, although it acted in a different way.Actually, we had a chance in the early days after WWII to make Viet Nam our ally, but the fear of Communism prevented us from doing "the right thing" by bringing Ho Chi Mihn into our circle of friends. Yes, he was probably by then a committed Socialist, and maybe even a Communist, but I really believe we could have wooed him away from the Soviet Union, and later from China, and I say this because, apart from the France, the one nation Viet Nam has traditionally hated the most was China. Animosity still lingers there today.Viet Nam is not the same country we fought for and against in the 60's & 70's. It's no paradise, but it certainly is no den of Communistic plotting and treachery, as we called it back then. Compared to other nations in the area, it seems to have turned out alright. All along I feared North Korea more than North Viet Nam.By the way, I agree with our involvement in Afghanistan. Al Qaeda was and is there in force. We should have committed our strength there and finished the job before ever thinking of anything else. I disagree that our involvement in Iraq has produced the type of government or situation we expected when we went in.I support our troops there, but I do not support the political decisions which brought us to this point. I do believe that we were lied to on numerous occasions, and to tell the truth, I can't figure out why. If it was for oil, then we messed up, because we are not benefitting from Iraq's oil production.If it was simply to put down Hussein, then I guess we "won". But the price we are paying now, and may pay in the immediate and long-range future hardly seems worth the effort.

As far as Afghanistan... I'm not sure that that job *can* be finished. Not unless we're willing to expand that war into several other countries, which would open a much larger can of worms.
We're going to have to disagree on Iraq, I think. As far as the lies, well, I think "the war was for oil" is the biggest one and the opposition has certainly told their fair share of whoppers. I also think that country would have disintigrated into a truly horrible mess if we had just up and left after toppling Hussein. I think we had to stay and try to put it back together. We did it with Japan, after a lot of mistakes, but they were well and truly crushed, which made that jon maybe easier.
I'm also Polyannaish enough to hold out hope for Iraq. If that contry can get its act together and become a country I think the effort will have been well worth it. They held free elections there, for gosh sake, despite the threat to life and limb, and there have been some impressive improvements and accomplishments. Sure wish some of the opposition party felt that way, though. Heck, it was Kerry and Rockefeller who lied about the "imminent attack" and the nukes, after all.
And what about Darfur??? How can anyone even consider tha possibility of doing anything there after the divisiveness of Iraq?
So in a way I think we're kinda of damned if we do and damned if we don't.

Very well done indeed. Labor intensive and time consuming and, therefore, requiring a great deal of commitment. Kudos and thanks.
All these problems have immense consequences individually. When combined they create a huge, self-enhancing feedback loop. The worse things get, the faster things get worse. Beyond the first item on your list, the order of importance is not really very significant. With the exception of number one, I do not think eliminating any of the others would necessarily stop the rest. If ALL forms of abuse were ended however, the rest would be resolved as a result. You made the right choice for the top of your list. You have actually done a better job than the ten commandments, which puts “thou shalt not kill” way down at number six. If that commandment were fulfilled the others would not even be necessary since any species that was above killing would certainly be beyond the others.
As far as these things being more important to address than climate change, I think it is hard to say. Perhaps if we eliminated abuse very quickly we would then cooperate in turning our attention to our environment. Since that scenario seems unlikely, I think we might need to concern ourselves with keeping our species alive long enough to tackle these other problems. Then again, perhaps a near extinction would allow human evolution an opportunity to correct the basic flaws that have brought to the verge of self-destruction.

Killing our own species is is truly a problem, in my view. As you say, if we stopped that, we could better address climate change, unnecessary species extinction, many others.
Another go at mankind would be interesting - what kind of species actually kills off its own species to the extent that we do? There is definitely some mis-wiring or a creeping virus in the network.

I'm with on 9 concerns. I'm not so sure on "overpopulation"
overall a good hub, but I have to disagree with part of "#5 .. oil from compressed turkey and chicken parts. Threfore, some oil shortages may be artificial." I think actually OPEC is lying about how much oil is left, and the evidence is in the fact that they are starting to sell more "dregs" or sour oil. I think the oil industry is totally messing with us like a tiger with it's tail in a trap it's all teeth and claws and they are behaving insane because they know the Earth is running out of oil sooner then later. See peak oil news, for more info.
The part about making vegi-oil out of trash, turkey parts etc.. that's doable for a small % of the current oil we use. Google: barrel per capita. for more info on that.
It is interesting the MBM (meat and bone meal) is has 2/3rds the energy of coal.
But, over all I fear the impending post oil is sooner than we think, and we are more dependent on oil then we realize in many ways we are ignoring. About 15% of every barrel we use in the US is for plastics and other non-fuel products, most of them disposable trash.
Anyway, I really enjoyed most of this hub, except I do think we have enough food and land for everybody and I believe education and power given to women would significantly control world population growth enough to make overpopulation a non-issue.

Sometimes it's hard to stay positive when there's just so much that is "wrong" with the world. You have to ignore the big picture every now and then. The world is not perfect - far from it - and we have many challenges ahead.
I hope you can see ... these are Economics, and Politics' created Problems.

Great Hub and great links! That is everything that a Hub should be. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), most of these problems like population explosion, use of resources, climate change, etc. will be "solved" when the crises emerge from peak oil. The ship will be righted. I just hope me and mine are are amongst those who make it through the transition.
It's a shame that many of these concerns have been around for a while, and are still concerns - if not greater concerns - today. Thanks for sharing this. Voted up and awesome.

I need to say, more I know about the life and the world, more I think we are not going to have a nice future, at all. There is something very evil and very selfish in a human mind, which is constantly creating these terrible threats.
We already possess all knowledge needed to solve most of these problems, yet we don't do that.
