King County and The Greater Seattle Area

Bellevue, in Snohomosh County, Washington was named Number Four on MoneyCNN's list of Top 100 Best Places to Live in America for 2010. It is off highway I-405 east of Seattle and Mercer Island and sightly north of Beaux Arts Village. A number of enjoyable county or state parks are located in the same area and Bellevue leaders have dedicated significant efforts to achieving sustainability.

Bellevue is also one of the many fast-growing suburbs in America, also termed a North American boomburb, because of its accelerated growth and addition of urban features to its suburban core. Once a rural area, Bellevue began to grow quickly after the I-90 bridge to Seattle was opened in in 1940 and a second bridge was opened int he early 1960s (see photo below). A shopping center followed to bring additional residents and visitors to Bellevue. In the 2010s, four major shopping malls are located in the four directions of Bellevue.

Planning and construction for the 2010s include developing more of the Downtown Bellevue district and the area of the city near Redmond, Washington. New businesses and shopping, along with light rail are thought to guarantee future growth.

Mercer Island

The City of Mercer Island is located between Seattle and Bellevue, just west of Beaux Arts Village, in Lake Washington. It is crossed by a floating bridge on highway I-90. The city/island is roughly five miles long by two miles wide, encompassing about 6.25 square miles of land along I-90 on the way to the picturesque community of the Town of Beaux Arts Village south of Bellevue (see attached maps).

The island serves as a suburban residential area for Seattle-Bellevue, with natural preservation areas in parks and green spaces, developed beaches and shorelines for residents and tourists, and a modern businhess district that includes historic sites as well.

Beaux Arts Village

Beaux Arts Village

This historic community is a 1908 artists' colony, now a town, three miles from Bellevue. It has lost a few residents in the 2000s, but is home to 298 people in 2010 and one of the most affluent areas in King County with homes raging in values from $800K - up.. Average family incomes are high, although average incomes for males are about twice that of females living in this town.

Incorporated in the early 1950s by art students and artists,, the town is still home to the Beaux Arts Western Academy. Membership is included with the purchase of each home in the town. The theme of the artists' colony was lost in the 1940s as the land was divided into lots and sold for homes; and the beach developed to become a center of family activities. Very small, the land area of the town is only 1/10 square mile, matched by 1/10 water area along its 1,100 feet along the shoreline of eastern Lake Washington, according to town records.

The shoreline is owned by the Beaux Arts Western Academy and the private beach is reserved by Beaux Arts Village regulations for residents and their invited guests. Residents must accompany their guests on the beach as well. For added safety, the town has become an active Block Watch Community. Crime rates are extremely low each year.

Annual special events held in Beaux Arts Village include a yearly sailboat race festival, a summer picnic and overnight camp on the beach, and the big Winter Dinner. Smaller events are also ongoing.

Sustainability

Sustainability is promoted in the town, specifically in a woodlands and shoreline habitation protect to protect and promote native plants and wildlife. Home renovators and builders are asked to be aware that Bald Eagles live be in the area and must be accommodated and protected.

The ultimate in sustainability is embraced by the Beaux Arts Centennial Home, a model of the concept of green living and environmental conservation. it is constructed of 96% recycled housing materials, solar energy power, a clean ventilation system, rain gardens, and water-collecting porous pavements to save water and provide cool temperatures in the summer.

These are examples of the range of sustainability reached in King County and adopted by Bellevue and nearby towns.

I think there must be fishing around Bellevue in park areas and around lakes. Probably golf, too!

There's a lot to do in this area of Washington. I'm from Tacoma, myself, and I love it here. While we may be no Silicon Valley, most of the worlds technology has some sort of Seattle imprint on it.
