Economy and People

Orange County is considered to be a part of the Los Angeles Media Market, since it is just one county southeast of LA. This market is the largest media market in the USA.

The result of the size, reach, and effects of this media market and its advertising and information distribution is a high level of business growth other than in retail sales, along with increasing numbers of jobs in current and emerging occupational fields.

However, 250,000 individuals commute into Orange from three other counties: Los Angeles and San Bernardino/Riverside Counties, the last two making up the Inland Empire. You might wish to update this hub. Teaching positions are NOT plentiful in California. The truth of the matter is, that if you speak Spanish or Special Education you have a decent chance at getting a job in the profession. . . especially if you are fresh out of college and female. College girls are cheaper to hire because they start at the bottom of the pay scale and often get married and stop teaching. At which point, another single girl can be hired at rock bottom rates again. I doubt you will find anyone to ADMIT this but it is sadly true.

I'm from O.C. originally and didn't know (until now) that the Native American population has gone up 45% since 1980. O.C. is great, and Fullerton (dead center O.C.) is excellent too. It's got the Muckenthaler Center, Harbor Blvd is chock full of art galleries. Once a year they host Night in Fullerton with many great - free -offerings. The town also hosts a huge public library, the state university and wonderful Fullerton College. Musical performances in Fullerton can be heard after their L.A. gigs at a fraction of the cost. Great research - voted up.

Well, I've obviously been looking in ALL the wrong places for 3 years now for work in the medical/dental field. The "for profit" schools are charging hundreds of thousands of dollars giving out the equivalent of A.S. degrees that a GOOD 2 year technical, community program could do in MUCH less than half the price! Not only is this saturating our profession, charging new students who know no better and driving down salaries horrifyingly quickly! SUBSTITUTE hygienists (a hygienist that comes in on a last minute basis due to illness, etc) get paid on average $350-360 per DAY; just to show up) I saw an ad for a hygienist in Newport Beach last week; he offered "a DEAL"; wanted the hygienist to pay for Everything, taxes/social sec, insurances (which really is nothing new) for an 8 hr day. 50 mins, sitting over ONE mouth the entire time, taking own xrays, charting, oral hyg. education and do this with NO HELP whatsoever....for the GREAT deal of $250 per day! If THIS is what is happening now in this country we truly ARE screwed! Hate to be so realistic but I've been doing this for quite some time, from FL to CA, and its just sad but true!

Suzanne - We have stories similar to yours in many fields, so thanks for adding yours. While shocking to many readers,it is too frequencly occurring.

Best wishes for finding an employer that offers you both respect and decent wages/benefits.
