The Southeastern Nations

While these lists are not fully inclusive, they represent major nations, bands, and independent groups among Native Americans in the Southeastern States. Additional groups emerge and request recognition on the state and federal levels regularly. There are a number of state-recognized groups and other groups in the process of attaining either state or federal recognition in addition to those presented below.

As Native Americans moved eastward from the North and the Pacific Northwest Coast to fill the continent, they met Europeans that eventually drove them back foprm the East, many of them onto reservations in the West. The American West is home to the largest numbers of reservations in the 21st Century, and some eastern states have none.

SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI NATIVE BUSINESS

  • Biloxi Nation -  The original name in Biloxi language is Taneks-anya or first people. It was also known as Anaxis and Annocchy, gradually becoming Biloxi. Related to Sioux Nation.
  • Capinans Nation - Related to Biloxi Nation, Pascagoula Nation; all related to the Sioux.
  • Moctobi Nation - English speakers in 1699 made up this name for a group that lived with Biloxi Pascagoula Nations.
  • Pascagoula Nation. - Name means bread people and they made specialty breads that are still available today. Also called Mfskigula, probably actually Muskhogeans to the Biloxi.

Native Americans in Southern Mississippi are successful in Native-owned businesses, Pow Wows, and partnerships with university study and research programs that lead to new job creation.

Have you read Piers Anthony's "Tatham Mound"? It is a FANTASTIC source of information about Southeastern Tribes at the time of the arrival of the white man.

I also suggest that a tour of Mountville, AL. It's a great an informative restored pre-Columbian Muskogee Indian site.

I am a Creek Indian and a member of the Poarch Band of Creeks. The current address is 5811 Jack Springs Road, Atmore, AL 36502

Seems to me the most important Nation the Choctaws

are left off this website.

I am trying to locate the Choctaw Reservation in Georgia, the Mississippi Choctaw during Indian Removals.

Every website says Cherokee in reservations in georgia.

Could it be possible the Mississippi Choctaws are really Cherokee? Someone let me know your thoughts @ sweetascoco@yahoo.com

Oklahoma Choctaw nation: http://www.choctawnation.com/

Mississippi Choctaw nation: http://www.choctaw.org/

The Georgia band of Choctaw were moved to Mississippi; however, Choctaw had also lived in Alabama and Louisiana.
