Jerry Lewis, MDA Chairman from 1952 - 2011; End of MDA Telethons as We Know Them

Muscular Dystrophy Association Cutbacks
On August 3-4, 2011, controversy grew around Jerry Lewis's retirement from MDA as National Chairman and Labor Day Telethon Host in 2012.
During Jerry's term as chairman (1952 - 2011), billions of dollars were raised for research, allowing MDA to be less dependent on government funding than other disease research entities in America had been. In addition, several types of neuromuscular diseases and conditions became treatable and curable through the results of telethon research dollars.
MDA made no excuses for quick, rashly announced program cutbacks, including the MDA Telethon and it's host, who had been credited with being the Number One Celebrity to Influence Others in the world (see list below). Beginning 9/4/2011, the MDA Telethon became a 6-hour entertainment show. 6:00 PM to Midnight, live on the East Coast from Las Vegas. MDA stated that too many TV stations affiliates had dropped the annual telethon, the entertainment acts were no longer good, and they (MDA) were taking immediate action.
However, some event or action caused this ludicrous set of changes just 30 days before what was to have been Jerry's last MDA Telethon. What was that action or event? We may never know, but we can see a large organization ousting a Senior Citizen of much worth just a year after the world lost Ed McMahon, the other respected Senior of the show. MDA would not be a fraction as successful without the money that Jerry Lewis brought them through a lifetime of dedication. We may never know what happened.
Now, we will likely never know Jerry's secret personal reason - the one he always threatened to tell - for supporting MDA all these 59 years. How many of us will continue to support MDA now, in the face of their rash actions?

Roger Ebert ripped Jerry Lewis's removal as host of the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon as comedians rallied in support. News came Wednesday that the Tucson-based MDA had relieved - Chuck Carlson: Jerry Lewis deserved a better fate | The Enquirer | battlecreekenquirer.com
OK, the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon headed toward Def-Con Cheesy at least two decades ago. Even back in the mid-1980s, when the only thing that twittered were birds and a VCR was the latest in technology, the event was already looking a l
Labor Day Telethon
Until There's a Cure, There's a Telethon
Although I had not been near a TV Set on Labor Day for a decade as of 2008, I used to watch the traditional Muscular Dystrophy Association's annual Labor Day telethon for many years. I resumed watching in 2009, but many poeople have seen it ever since the first official event held at Carnegie Hall in 1955. Previous to that, there was a series of MDA TV Specials since 1952, but the telethon was not the iconic official LABOR DAY TELETHON until 1966. Broadcast over just one station in NYC in 1966, it brought in over $1,000,000 even then, during the early Viet Nam War.
Broadcast in some form since the 1950s, this event has raised $2.5 Billion research and treatments for neuromuscular diseases that include muscular dystrophy.
MDA has not relied solely on government grants that may not offer enough funding for adequate research and that may also restrict the organization overly much with governmental oversight delays. The MDA Telethon has brought successful treatment, longer and more productive lives. and hope to 1000s of patients and their families.
I will never forget one Telethon in particular in which an adult male sat center stage in a wheelchair. His body folded down onto itself in a way suggestive of a Japanese fan. However, his singing in a professional sounding, strong voice was moving. His song was Some People Call me Chameleon - "Some people call me chameleon, they say I change from face to face..." His wife and he had just become parents biologically to twins, likely via artificial insemination. He was a dad.
People with muscular dystrophy are as capable as anyone else in many ways. Stephen Hawking is in his 60s, has a neuromuscular disease, is still brilliant, and is contributing to the new horizon in physics and now-privatized aerospace travel.
The Labor Day Tradition of the MDA Telethon is an important part of the cultural skyline of America. Despite some opinions against Jerry Lewis for his outspoken calling out of some institutions, I think he has done a profoundly good for since 1952, when he and Dean Martin hosted the first show for MDA. As of 2008, he has yet received no pay for the work he does for MDA - over 55 years of long hours and effort. How many people would do it? As of August 2011, MDA turned its collective back on him.
Jerry Lewis is one reason that I teach martial arts free of charge to at- risk youth, laid off workers, many people with physical conditions, and others that cannot afford the expensive lessons elsewhere, along with physical therapy. I work with neuromuscular retraining in some of classes where we have helped youth and adults to avoid surgeries and to discard some of their wheelchairs.
I have only be doing this for 26 years (2008), about half the time that Jerry Lewis has worked for MDA and the people it serves. I hope to be half as successful when I have donated another 26 years.

I've always been divided about Jerry Lewis ever since he referred to people by a derogatory phrase I won't repeat. This is aman who is helping them? I have a biased opinion because I have slight cebral palsy in my right side and I am very sensitive to so called political correctness vs. not mentioning a disability at all. For example, I detest "physically challenged." That refers to a wide range and can be just a need for reading glasses. He has raised a lot of money and that is excellent. He may yet reveal why he has been doing these fundraisers -perhaps after he dies this information will be revealed the way katherine Hepburn's diaries were revealed after she died.
I am way late on reading this. But I thoroughly enjoyed your hub. I knew Jerry Lewis had been doing the telethon for a long time but I would have never guessed as how long. Here is your up.
Hey Patty, I watch Jerry Lewis for many years and even contributed to the MDA over the years. I would always root for him to break the goal every year and I have to admit it was inspiring how people would pull together, because of his empowering personality. It was awesome to watch. :) Great hub! Definitely voted up! :)
He's not beloved in the disability community, who don't want to be talked about as pathetic, but rather as vital human beings with disabilities.
I must say in reading the announcement that I have never heard of any of the announced hosts for the show. At 35, I'm not sure if this says more about me loving classic Hollywood, or about me being 35,period.
Dearest Patty,
You bring up some interesting points! I somehow missed this in the news! I have supported MDA and the Jerry Lewis Telethon for decades! I have several friends affected and JL always provided long-lasting hope!
I too, have waited for so many years to learn the secret of his motivation! I always thought it must be someone in his family, maybe a sibling, that died early on due to this disease, and it was kept a secret! (Hard to do in Hollywood, however!?)
This corporate "upset" will be good for ratings! We will all be tuning in to see "what's up??"
I do hope it wasn't some immediate health issue with Jerry himself!? The last few MDA Telethons he didn't look too well?
I send them all the very BEST! They have done some amazing work over the years!
Blessings for bringing this so quickly to our attention!
Earth Angel!
I have been a huge fan of Jerry Lewis since I was a kid watching his movies on a saturday afternoon, his comedy was amazing. I wasn't aware back then of his fantastic charitable contribution to society though, it's the mark of the man. His participation and efforts over a long and colorful career will not be forgotten.
Long live JL.
I also missed the announcement. It's the end of an era. As a child I loved watching his telethons with my family. He is the reason I did the walkathons for over 20 years. I was inspired by his dedication and as a young person it made me aware of the need for service to your community. I suppose Dick Clark will retire next and then the last of the great "ones" will be gone. Thanks for this informative hub. Dee
You're quite welcome Patty. I would think it would definitely be a different show without his wit mastery. I mean Jerry Lewis was a natural comic, in every sense of the word and for a very long time. But, I don't think it would do as good without him. When he did the show he was quite serious about it and I simply do not think there will be any substitute that will match his long standing and accomplishments. :)
I think that they should have given Jerry a more honorable sendoff, provided he agreed not to embarrass the organization on air by complaining about being forced out.
But the fact is that it was long passed time for Lewis to go. I found his presentation terrible and irritating like finger nails on a chalkboard - any time I saw him hosting I changed the channels.
This is not to take away from his great achievements as the host and with the organization, but it would have been best for everyone if he had realized that it was time to pass on the torch rather than for someone else to have to make the tough decision. If he had chosen to retire both he and the organization would have benefited from favorable publicity rather than this mess.
Great article Patty. I enjoyed all f the information imparted about the Telethon and the origin of Labor Day. I also hope Jerry Lewis will disclose his secrets at a press conference.
The MDA show won't be the same without Jerry Nice Hub! voted up

I did, indeed, watch the Telethon in 2008, but coverage did not begin locally until the small hours of the morning. It was eerie how Labor Day, the Republican National Convention and Hurricane Gus coincided. And I am happy that the governments and CBOs were so much more organized for this storm.
Hope everyone had a good weekend!
