Charlie Chan from Honolulu
Famous mystery author, by Earl Derr Biggers was born in Warren, Ohio.
He graduated form Harvard and became a humor writer and turned to mysteries, but wrote just 6 Charlie Chan mystery novels.
The novels were based on a real Honolulu, Chinese detective named Chang Apana, who was quite successful in Hawaii and San Francisco. Mr. Biggers wrote without prejuicial race stereotyping, but the movies put back the stereotypes of Chinese and African Americans that Biggers fought against all of his life.
Charlie Chan lived on Punch Bowl Hill in Honolulu and solved crimes and mysteries there and in the United States. In the movies, which number more than the books, he also traveled to Europe and Egypt with his sons, Number 1 through Number 4, leaving another near-dozen at home.
