Organized Internship Programs - More Than Hard Work

During a timeline of 11 years in the 2000s - 2010s, I was able to train a number of interns annually in office and healthcare related jobs with the help of already-trained interns hired longer-term.

In addition during those years, my bosses, staff, and I were successful in completing a large annual program of pre-training and placing of at least 1,500 - 1,800 youth ages 14 - 19 in summer internships offered by government offices and non-profit agencies. One year, we were fortunate enough to be able to place these young men and women in jobs within the private sector, where some were hired on a yearly basis and a few were offered small scholarships as well. This included veterinary practices, architectural firms, grocery operations, art agencies, and many other interesting businesses.

Another 1,200+ youth in each summer aged 13 and older received stipends for their training in work readiness skills, along with reading and mathematics enhancement. This evolved to reach into the school year to offer year-round enhanced education and training in preparation for summer internships.

WHAT DOES "PERMANENT" TAKE?

Working hard, takikng notes in your employment portfolio, showing good appearance and manners, being productive and cooperative, showing initiative at the most appropriate times times, and becoming more visible as a good employee can help turn an internship into a solid job/career offer, but this does not always occur. In fact, a few employers actually use government-subsidized interns regularly for a prescribed number of months and do not hire any on a full-time basis. Thus, this is not always the answer to a career.

LARGE COMPANIES

City sponsored summer internship or summer job programs are no longer as widely found as previous to the 2010s, but some large companies offer the best programs to lead a student from internship to full-time job and career. One of these is the Disney conglomerate. Some of their locations re-hire interns from year to year and offer full-time employment after high school graduation. For the college-bound, Disney can offer internships clear though college graduation, followed by offers of careers in business and other aspects of Disney. The company even has its own College Internship Program.

Disney workers that graduate from college and take up other careers sometimes retain part-time work with Disney Land® or other venues, work out their careers to retirement, and keep their Disney jobs as retirement employment. Disney seems a good internship-to-career option.

Check out other similar companies for their programs - like Six Flags®, the King's Island® group and others. The United Nations is another organization that promotes an excellent and effective internship program in many countries.

Where are the Internships in Summer 2011?

In America during mid-June 2011, when many internship positions are being filled, we find 38,000+ on SimplyHired.com and approximately 24,000 on Indeed.com. Between these two major job search and trending engines that scour the Internet for jobs, it is easy to see some overlap in internship positions available. After performing a consolidation, we have the following high demand positions listed below.

ADVICE

  • When reading internship adverts, read closely for age requirements. Few jobs or internships exist for ages 13 - 15 years, unless through city summer job programming or state or county fairs of short duration.
  • Some internship positions in the Retail Industry turn into part-time summer jobs with no advancement.
  • Further, some ads may be misleading. For example, an ad for Avon salepeople used "intern" as a keyword to draw people in to read the ad, although no internships were posted.
  • Some ads are looking for a medical intern - that is, a beginning doctor in an internship prior to residency for a hospital.

Best Larger Internship Companies are in BOLD

  20. A number of other companies have a need for marketing interns.

Do a search for internships and then observe the guidelines applying, interviewing , asking questions, interview follow-up, and productive work experiences that can help change your internship into a long-term job and career. As you become more confident in the internship, ask your supervisor how you can apply for a full-time position in the future and positively use this relationship as your frist mentoring experience.

Hi Patty, your hubs are always so informative and easy to read. It's a pity I am too old for internship at one of those large companies. Maybe if I moved to the US I could fake my age...just kidding.

Love your hubs.

Hi, Patty....Good advice relative to parlaying an internship into regular full-time employment.

You'll notice I didn't use the word "permanent." That's because there is no such thing as "permanent employment." I retired from a career in human resources management, and "permanent" is a word I NEVER used. I also trained managers and supervisors NEVER to use it in relation to jobs. Use of that word in the employment context can create a multitude of problems, including lawsuits! We always used, instead, the term "regular full-time" employment. It means essentially what the job hunter is seeking, but doesn't give the (wrong) impression that a person is being hired for life regardless of what he/she may do when hired. A very important distinction.

LOL Ohio is one of the at-will employment states, so lawsuits regarding the word "permanent" in cases where no contract was extant have all failed.

Internships are a good way to learn and add to a resume even if you don't get hired by the company you intern for. As long as its in your chosen field its going to help no matter what. As long as you do whats asked of you to the best of your ability and are not afraid to ask questions if you don't know something.

Successful internships always help, even with other fields of work - learning good work habits, new ways of thinking, many other I think. Thanks!
