Hubnuggets Holiday Hooplah
68It's Labor Day in NuggetLand!
Our HubNuggets Adventure last week in the Bermuda Triangle was a particularly long one for me. I am glad we arrived back to reality in safety, but I need to stock up on radio parts now...But it's a holiday - time to celebrate!
What is Labor Day about? For many, it's about taking a couple of days off work. But for others, it means working on a holiday in restaurants, hotels, hospitals, stores, fire and police stations, and other places as vacationers and folks on weekend getaways come to town. Still, we can celebrate the Spirit of Labor Day no matter what else we are doing. We celebrate the rights of workers to fair and equitable employment in a safe environment in both Canada and USA, along with other good aspects of employment. We also celebrate volunteer work and the iconic Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, but that has changed --
One visible event should be really exciting for Labor Day 2011! Will Jerry Lewis appear on the new, shortened, 6-hour Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon for MDA without Jerry Lewis? Will there be protestors?
It will be interesting. No one will know for sure until we have seen the program: Sunday September 5 at 6:00 PM EST. We'll be watching at the HubNugget Krewe Club House! In addition, the great comics and comedians of our time intend to hold their own show in California or Las Vegas to honor Jerry and the MDA kids. We may have two shows instead of one this year. However...
If the MDA Telethon won't give us Jerry Lewis, he'll just have to join us here for Labor Day HubNuggets! Let's look at Holidays and Celebrations, which make up our first topic category for HubNuggets Wannabes this week. Please enjoy the first six nominated Hubs and vote for your favorite.

The Holidays and Celebrations Nominees
- Throw a "Chopped Challenge" Dinner Party
Learn how to throw a memorable dinner party modeled after the Food Network's hit show Chopped. - My day in Placerville, Idaho
One of the neatest and old ghost towns in Idaho you'll ever see is Placerville, Idaho. There are still people living there today, because they just enjoy the place. It's kind of quiet and layed back just like it should be for times we live in. ... - Travel by steamtrain to Blackpool for a holiday in the late 1940's
We travelled by steam train to Blackpool in the late 1940's. Locked out of the B and B all day we spent the days on Blackpool's fabulous beaches. Punch and Judy, donkey rides, sandcastles and the Pleasure Beach were all great fun. - Vintage Christmas Gift Wrap

MDA, St. Jude and Other Charities
Have you ever held a carnival or yard sale to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association or another of your favorite charities? If a production of that magnitude is simply too overwhelming, there are lots of things you might do to help.
Considering personal finance, wills are important and inheritances can leave massive amounts of possessions for family, friends, and the community! I learned this first hand when a friend and I recently inherited four HUGE storage sheds -- We almost called the HubNugget Krewe to grab their hidden cache of bulldozers and dig us out, but we might have lost the kitties (RedElf and Enelle Lamb) in the mountains of goods!
Anyway, we heard Ripplemaker'sangel wings rustling around us and got busy -- We donated many things to childrens' programs: New karate uniforms and equipment to a local community dojo that helps at-risk youth, huge boxes of toys to Ronald McDonald House, who helped my friend's tiny niece when she was burned in a house fire; and good books to local schools and libraries. An estate sale will turn many other items into cash that we might donate to Shriner's Children's Burn Unit in Cincinnati, St. Jude's, or MDA.
But what will we do with the six dozen high-powered flashlights? Perhaps Gal Noir might use them in her next mystery show. Maddie Ruud might use them to light up the night as she identifies the various spam attacks she must discern at all hours. Or, Jason Menayan can use them as search lights for nighttime advertising. Of course, Ladyjane1 can use them as footlights for her own act, since her evil twin sister, Lady Gaga, released her from kidnapping.
We also have a gross of swords, so we'll save a few for the pirate-loving Simone Smith and sell and donate the rest. By the way, Simone, have your pirate friends any use for 150 shot glasses? While Simone's thinking about that, let's all look at the Personal Finance Nominees and vote in this category.

Hmmm. I think Pets will be my favourite category. Scratch that-I know it will. Well, regarding Cardisa's comment:. I was thrilled to get a hubnugget. Now I am six days from officially losing my newbie status, but I stopped feeling like a newbie weeks ago.
The Bermuda Triangle WOW! I've heard so many frightening stories about boats and planes disappearing there, I'd be afraid to venture anywhere near it for fear I never made it back.
Read and voted in all three categories
How exciting to read this and find a wannabe from me!! I love reading them and this is too cool! Thanks! Off to read and vote!
Love the volunteer work. I donate to Goodwill and Key Training, and of course, church.
I'm sure I could use a couple of those flashlights, glad you donated the rest.
We have such a great, talented set of new writers it was hard to choose.
Good luck to them all.

Great hub! Voted, shared and voted up! Congrats to all the nominees - hard to choose only one in each category!
One of my hubs is a nominee, odd that it only has 24 total views
Cool. Voted all three.
There are so many talented writers here! I feel privileged and honored to be among them. Thank you for the nomination!
I had a lot of trouble picking favorites form each category this week. They're all great!
... and I'll check in with the pirates about those shot glasses! They keep breaking 'em, so I bet we'll be needing as many as we can get ARRRRR grubby mits on!
Thanks to everyone who voted. I am honored to be among such a talented group of writers!
Thank you for your dedication to all newbies.
This is a great introduction of new Hubbers. Is there some place where we learn how many new people join the community each week, month or year? It would be interesting to see a graph. And, how many people remain active, fall off the radar or leave completely? Congratulations to all the Hubneggets.

Looking forward to an amazing show! Usually, our excess "usable stuff" goes to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the local Goodwill, but now we have a new charity to collect for ...and such wonderful new authors to check out. Great crop of nominees this week again, Patty.
