Every year, the USA and Canada each publishes a list of birth countries from which people are not permitted to immigrate to America or Canada. This is a matter of numbers and and attempt to balance the American population with more or less equal emigres from all nations. If your country is on the list for 2010, you cannot work permanently in the USA under a Green Card.
You may look for these lists at official American and Canadian immigration web pages or go to H1Base at http://www.h1base.com/. Be aware that H1Base charges fees for their help.
If you already have an employer in mind to work with you as your sponsor, you should work with that employer and US Immigration. If not, H1Base will search for employers for you for a fee - and they may night find one. This is risky and you may lose a large sum of money without receiving any results.

Finding A Sponsor for Temporary or Permanent Employment
If you were born in a country that makes you eligible for immigration to America on a Green Card (permanent residency), you can find US employer sponsors through actions you can take in your own country of residence. This is also true for temporary work Visas. The best alternative might be to work with our college or university guidance office or internship programs to make connections.
Another alternative is to visit US companies that interest you and that have facilities in your own country. You might be able to secure a job in your home country with a US company and be transferred to the USA. Related to this, a non-US company may be able to send you to America to work for them as well.
The employer must successfully complete a petition process to have you authorized to come into the USA to work. It is time consuming and available for your review: Employer Petitioning. There is also a different petitioning process for employers of temporary workers that will not receive Green Cards.
In short, in order to find a sponsoring employer for working in America (or Canada), speak with 1) your university or college or 2) your employer.

An interesting read. Thank you.
very informative and well written.
A great Hub. And it was very complete, too. You did your homework well. Thanks for the information. Don White
LOL I shudder to think.
Being a one-time Lao refugee, this hub certainly resonates with my own personal experience and my family's experience. We were very fortunate as we were given seven families of sponsors! Safe to say, they were all supportive and always willing to be of help. My first novel recalls the experience and I hope to publish by this year with the help of a literary agent.
Thanks so much for sharing this, Patty! I'm certainly one of the lucky ones to have found sponsorship!
Happy New Year

Haven't realized that being born in Colombia would get me out from this opportunity.
Immigration is a interesting topic. I had the opportunity to represent a client in an asylum hearing for immigration. It was an amazing experience.
Wow.. what a special hub! I want to spend some time in NYC and I think the time lenght will be beyond the three month criteria. It looks like from your hub that I will not be able to get a green card. I live in the UK. The hub has highlighted my need to research more! Thanks x
I do like to study further in the USA or Canada. Their governments offer a flexible time, especially when you want to master a graduate course. Many professionals in the Philippines migrate to either USA or Canada for a greener pasture and of course, additional learning. Thank you for this hub, Ms. Patty Inglish.
And my familyI want to move to south Dakota/Minneapollis from the UK, but we need sponsorship ( don't we?) please if anyone has any helpful advice, especially how to search for job opportunity with sponsorship? Thank you so much!
