How the True Meaning of the December 2012 Mayan Prophecy Was Explained By Mayans On PBS

Updated on December 11, 2012

12/21/2012 Is In the Middle Of A Mayan Time Cycle

The world will not or did not end on December 21, 2012, because that month and year mark the very center point of a 40-year Mayan Cycle. Logically, if the world were going to end or be conquered or carried away by aliens, then either event would not occur until circa 2032, about the time we establish a Mars Colony. The 40-year cycle mentioned is one of turmoil, chaos and bad events, but many four-decade periods of history have been just so.

The Mayans explain that they have a series of calendars and not just one calendar. The Doomsday Date around which many December 2012 parties were planned is the end date of one calendar that will lead into the beginning date of a new calendar.

Time in the Mayan system is not linear, but similar to the time of the Indigenous Australians - The Dreamtime. The Mayan concept of time is a total of past-present-future all at once, occurring in a spiral of cycles. The Dreamtime contains the concept of then-and-now-together as well.

If the world should/did end on December 21, 2012, then it is a matter of coincidence -- It is not a Mayan prophecy according to the Mayan descendants of today.

Lessons From the Mayan Prophecy

In a PBS Special broadcast on WOSU-TV HD on Sunday December 9, 2012, the Mayan Prophecy was explained by a group of today's Mayans that include a fascinating woman that is a Nobel Peace Prize Winner. The advertising blurb was such:

What do the Maya really say about 2012? Is the world going to end on December 21, 2012? This award-winning film takes issue with popular hysteria claiming that cataclysmic events will occur in 2012. Featuring interviews with Nobel Peace Laureate and Maya Indian Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Mayan Elders, leading scientists, and other Nobel Laureates including Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama, the film shares some real wisdom about what we should all be doing today to create a better future.

This documentary is set for rebroadcast on December 14, 2012 at 1:00 AM, but is also for rent or sale to be viewed at your leisure, before or after 12/21/2012.

The biggest lesson to be taken away from the documentary is that humankind should continue their work to use resources wisely, a lesson spoken by many Indigenous Peoples many times before.

A Bit About the Film

2012: True Mayan Prophecy -- By filmmakers Dawn Engle and Ivan Suvan- jieff.

The film features Nobel Peace Prize Winner Rigoberta MenchĂș Tum (Guatemalan/Mayan descent) as she explains the concept of Mayan time, system of Mayan calaendars, and the meaning of the December 2012 date. She also presents two elders of ther group that have been her teachers in these concepts.

This documentatory also includes ideas and thoughts offered by the Dalai Lama and Bishop Desmond Tutu to make a fascinating film. The movie provides much information for thought in considering the history of mankind and our hopes for the future.

The makers of this film founded PeaceJam in 1996 in order to teach the world's youth about Nobel Peace Prize Laureates and their work. Fortunately, one of our Mayans is such a laureate. The filmmakers were married by Bishop Desmond Tutu.

The film includes the work of scientists in global warming and DNA research as well as man-on-the-street interviews, some of which are humorous and remind me of Jay Leno's Tonight Show's Jay Walking segment.

If you're planning a Doomsday Party on December 20 -21, make it a Mayan calendar changing party. Coincidentally, it is also the Winter Solstice and thereafter, the hours of daylight in the Northern Hemiphere will be lengthening - I'd have a Sunlight Party. December should be full of parties, there are so many holidays in it...

You'll have time for Christmas and New Year's, after all!
