2010: 300+% Job Increase Over Projections in June 2010

During the summer of 2010, news from the respected business economy publication BLOOMBERG BUSINESSWEEK (reference link) was that Canada and Australia seemed little touched by the Recession of 2008-2010 that affected USA, UK, and other countries. At the same time, Australia experienced Unemployment in June 2010 of only 5.1%, the low rate when compared with USA and UK an indicator of open job listings in high demand of workers.

The number of job listings spidered across the Internet for Australia reached over 165,400 on the jobs search engine Indeed Australia (reference). A story on Yahoo!Finance on July 9, 2010 stated that Australia (reference) possessed 11,100,000 people actively on the job; according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (reference). A report showed that economic forecasters predicted 15,000 new jobs for June 2010, but that the nation actually created 45,900 additional jobs - just over 300% of projections..

Projections for 2010 - 2011

A full copy of Australia Business Forecast Report Q3 2010 is a report published by Business Monitor International and for sale online at the price of 335 GBP.

Overall, a broad summary for the upcoming 4thQTR 2010 is a 2.3% total growth forecast for the country’s economy, spurred by continued business and government investments and the increasing Chinese demand for Australian resources. This all led to a remarkable creation of 45,900 jobs instead of the forecasted 15,000 in projections for June 2010, the end month of 3rd QTR. This trend is a firm continuation of marked growth beginning 4th QTR 2009. Chinese and Australian real estate sectors have also, reportedly, shown economic strength and growth during the last 12 months.

Whether there will be a slowdown or downturn in Australian and Chinese real estate during and after 4th QTR is uncertain during summer 2010. However, jobs continue to be created in July, but some analysts wonder about a possible Chinese property crash in 2010 – 2011 that would decrease the currently increasing demand for Australian resources in China. China’s business behaviors also include purchasing Australian companies and it will be interesting to see if this trend also continues. Other factors in economic growth include newly proposed resource taxes and their expected impact.

Australia Mining Futures to 2014

Business Monitor Internationalalso suggests that the 2010 - 2014 outlook for Australian mining industry overall is a strong one, The predicted growth at an average pace of 6.8% during the years 2010 - 2015. As discussed above, China, along with other Aisan nations, is exerting a high demand for natural resources that are mined in Australia and Aisan Countries expected to do so until at least 2015.

Australian Miningis a top relevant news publication about advances, current events, and futures in the mining industry around Australia. At the link below, you can read about the latest technical information available in the industry, including advances in equipment, mining techniques; old, new, and currently most effective mining methods; and a number of services to the mining industry. Minerals and ores of most interest include nickel, gold, iron, and magnetite, among others. Related jobs are listed on the site.

Australian Space Program

Spacefaring activities in Australia are under a resurgence of inerest as the Australian Space Research Insitute increases its energies. An all-volunteer organization, it relies on efforts provided by Australian Universities like Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and others.

Rocket launches are scheduled regularly at Woomera Australian Defense Force Facility, while additional projects are on hold and waiting funding and personnel in future.

The town of Woomera is owned by the Australian Defense Force. It offers visits to one of the most recognized aerospace historical sites of the 1960s - 1990s, to the Woomera National Aerospace and Missile Park at town center, a visitors information center, a heritage interpretation centet, and a museum. There is also film theater, bowling alley, swimming pool, retail shops, faverns, and others. Additional visits take tourists into the desert for the woldlife and plant. Woomera Marine Centre is also interesting.

Visiting and Working in Australia 2010 - 2015

In 2010, a call seems to be out to move to Australia. The werbsite Embrace Australia at http://www.embraceaustralia.com states that higher numbers of British residents emigrate to Australia than any other nation. teh site relays infomration from publications such as Currency UK suggesting that the UK economy is rather uncertain andmay remain so, while Chinese trade interest in Australian reosurces remains high and also is likely to reamain so for some years.

Embrace Asutralia tells us that many British residents retire to Australia as well as to emigrate for work, obtaining actual work visas.

ADVANTAGES IN AUSTRALIA

Climate

Besides a strong economy, the climate in Australia is more pleasant overall for the British tired of wet weather and Americans tired of the cold in the north.

Education

Education for children in Australia is advertised as top notch. Reprots are that 80% of youth atteend higher education facilities as well.

Healthcare

An NHS system is named Medicare in Australia and offered to permanent residents. However, private healthcare remains available via arrangements at work.

Culture

Much of the culture is located within a short distances of Austrailian coastlines and beaches, involving outdoor activities much of each year. Sightseeing can be done in any number of landscapes, from rainforests to deserts, an Aboriginal Peoples still call teh continent and country home in many areas.

@Hello, hello and Earth Angel -- with enough business reports, government projections, and news offerings, we can keep up with trends worldwide, I hope! Wouldn't it be grand if we could really transport the people who need work to the countries that need workers? One can hope. :)

Thanks to everyone who made comments and shar4ed dieas here. You're all the best!

Australia did survive the worst of the crisis but jobs can still be hard to find. The mining industry is booming but jobs are in out of the way places in the outback, which may not suit many families. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are the main cities for the big paying jobs and it helps if you have sponsorship or a job offer before you come over.

Great hub Patty, your research is excellent and from good sources.

Hello, always interesting reading a hub about Australia by non-Australians. Just wanted to make one comment re. healthcare. I don't think Medicare is a great system, you would be be almost mad to not get private health insurance if you can afford it, but usually it is done out of your own pocket, not through the company that you work for. I worked in the U.S. for a while, and I know the company I worked for had its own health plan, but that is not the norm here.

Schooling can be great, again depending on where you live. Some public schools are dreadful and in desperate need of funding. Private schools are expensive, and often have a long waitlist (ie, you have to put your child down when they are born). Having said that, they do seem to often find room for families from overseas.

One big plus about Australia - no matter how many years you've been working for a company, four weeks annual leave a year is given. Plus sick leave is added on top of your annual leave, it does not come out of it.

Australia is a great country, with some wonderful cities. When I lived in the U.S. I had a calender with pictures of Melbourne next to my desk and almost everyone that came by my cubicle would comment that they had no idea Melbourne was so big. The guy from my local Plaid Pantry in Portland (which is much smaller than Melbourne), asked me what it was like living in the outback, and how was I finding big city life?

Some areas of Australia may not be everyone's cup of tea, so like anywhere, do your research before accepting a job here, or you may find yourself out in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes jobs that can't be filled by Australians are vacant for a reason! I certainly don't the get the sense that we are unaffected by the recession. The government gave handouts last year - a stimulus package designed to encourage spending, but since they stopped I know a lot of retailers are suffering. Sometimes things just take longer to reach here, but I was encouraged by the employment info in this hub. Thanks Patty, for giving my beloved country such a great rap.

I also just wanted to point out to anyone looking at the salaries of jobs in Aus that the Australian dollar is not worth as much as the U.S. dollars, so what may sound like a great salary may look less when converted into U.S. dollars. I am sure most people know that, but just wanted to make sure.

Glassy profile image

Glassy Level 1 Commenter 18 months ago

Well at the time of writing this, the exchange rate for the Aus dollar is 0.91 to US dollar, so there is not much difference and if you are a person working on the minimum wage, you are far better off living in Australia then the US. The minimum wage in Aus is $15 dollars an hour ($569.90) per week - compared to $7.15 in the US and some states are as low as $5.15 and the workers have to rely on tips to make up for the lack of wage.

If you were to convert the Aus $15 dollars an hour to US, you would be on $13.76 an hour, so if you don't have much skills, Aus is the place to be.

As for Medicare, any citizen who wants to see a doctor, can go to many clinics in Australia and not pay a cent for seeing a doctor. Sure, there are many doctors who also charge highly for a visit, but you still have the choice of being able to pay nothing as a lot of doctors (Bulk Bill) and Medicare subsidizes some or all of the cost of the bill.

MayG profile image

Sure Glassy, the Aussie dollar is good at the moment, or should I say the US dollar is weak, but once upon a time it was as low as .50 to the U.S. dollar. Medicare might be okay for a doctor's visit, but I wouldn't want to be on a hospital waiting list! Look, I love Australia, but people on the minimum wage here are struggling to keep afloat. I think they would laugh to hear people saying it sounded great. We do tend to pay more for goods here too. Things such as clothing etc are cheaper in the States, simply because the market is so much bigger.

Glassy profile image

Glassy Level 1 Commenter 18 months ago

Yes, MayG you are right in saying that things are very expensive in Aus and that shows no sign of reversing anytime soon, but its still the lucky country in my opinion.

I learn something new everyday, since I have been hearing a lot of people say that they want to move to Ausralia; after reading this HubPage it is very clear why! If the U.S Economy was like that of Ausralia, as far as jobs and growth; then Mexico as far as the Free Healthcare. I am fairly certain that many U.S. Citizens would be content with life in the U.S.!!

Who am I, I'm no one in Congress or Politics and I can't change anything. I can say that many people feel that way and are willing to greener pastures. Sounds like they are within Australia and a few other places.

HI Patty, the jobs numbers you quote are interesting. Many of the "new" jobs are infact people like my wife and myself who were self-employed and whose businesses did not survive the GFC and have been un-employed or under-employed between 2008 and 2010. I have only just found full time work for the fisrt time since 2008 and we've had to move 5000 k's across the country to Kalggorlie Western Australan to get work with a renumeration package that is enough to live and save on. And, interestingly it is a truck driving job. I'll be driving semi-trailers and B-doubles and expect to be away from home for 5 to 7 days at a time.

I was living in Sydney for the past 10 years. I am a technical specialist earning $150k per year. However, it was really expensive to live in Sydney. Most of my friends were struggling with their mortgage. The house price was crazy and the interest rate for the mortgage was really high. You get good medical benefit but that comes from the high tax you pay. I was not able to save much after paying the rent and food. For the same amount of money you will get higher living standards in the State. Traffic was a nightmare too in Sydney. Very limited highways over there. It was part of the factor that drives the housing price up. Most people prefer living close to their jobs. In the State, you can live far away because they have great highways there.

Hi Patty

I currently live in Perth and moved to Australia over a year ago with a few of my friends. Our skills vary from bartender, tiler, carpenter, commercial diver...etc. The East coast was fun and exciting for the time we spent there but even with degrees in hand, we were treated like backpackers and offered low paying jobs or only paid a fraction of what one can make in WA.

We left for Perth and never looked back. There are so many jobs in Perth, you can be whatever you want to be. $1000 per week is standard for most labourer jobs and if you get your tickets for machines such as bobcat, excavator, loader or forklift, the money will rise substantially!

The mining boom is in full swing at the moment and companies find it hard to hold on to quality staff in the Perth area. If you were offered $3000-$5000 per WEEK, fly-in fly-out, would you go!? I would! This is why Perth needs so many workers. The city is expanding at an alarming rate. Extra capital increases building. Any tradie who can't make a living in Perth is in the wrong business! There are also alot of Admin/office jobs associated with this as well..

IT jobs are now in huge demand. Girls and guys are heading more towards engineering for the mines.

Australia is BOOMING....

If anyone can advise or have insights regarding studying the following courses in AUstralia, & hopefully able to get a working visa (they called it 485 in Australia), & eventually able to get an Australia PR (Permanent Resident status):-

1) Saw at internet, one of the school Silver Trowel in Perth, is offering courses like bricklaying, tiles, plastering & carpentry.

2) school fees for 2years = A$24,000.

3) above courses are at Certificate level III.

4) Myself, already 41 years old.

5) Have family & 2 kids.

6) After gradudate, able to get job?.

Thanks

hi all and patty i just discovered this site, are qualifications a big part in getting a job in australia?

i have 7 years of plastering behind me as well as some domestic plumbing quals but not fully qualified and im currently also doing site carpentry at college but i doubt i will be fully qualified in that either, the reason being that i am not fully qualified in the plumbing, and most probably the carpentry will be the same, is that once ive finished these courses i have to get a full time job and be assessed on site, but as i live in the uk its really quite hard to find someone to take you on, im 25 years old and have been plastering since i was 18, all learnt on the job.

so basically would i struggle to get work because i am not qualified??? also is there some kind of apprentice scheme for foreign student that i could jump on???

hope you all havd a good xmas, hope to hear from someone soon. cheers

Most jobs seem to require qualifications, driver's license, and a White Card (safety certification in Au.); though some Plastering Traineeships have been advertised on jobsjobsjobs.com.au and SimplyHired.com for Australia.

Thank you Patty for sharing great information. Have already got Australian PR but yet to make the move given my attachment with the current job. Wish I can find the job by applying online in 2012.

I'm quite suprised to see that drivers are even on the list. Although I'm happy to see Business Analyst is at the top (currently the field that I am studying).
