A City of Firsts

Incorporated in 1933, Garden City is a town near Detroit in Wayne County and enjoys a population of over 30,000 individuals as of 2008 and 81% of adults possess a high school diploma or higher education credential. The Healthcare and Social Services Industries make up the bulk of the local economy. However, Retail Sales accounts for over $4 million of the local economy and the Accomodations Industry contributes about $270K.

During 2008, the cost of living index in Garden City was 90.2. This is below the nation average of the US (100) and 71% of workers earn between $30,000 - 90,000 yearly.  30% earn between $50 - 75K.

Major Employers, Garden City Area:

  • Garden City Hospital
  • Garden City Osteopathic Hospital
  • St. Mary's Hospital - Livonia, Michigan
  • Ford Motor Company - Livonia
  • Crestwood Dodge Inc. - Famous for their TV commercials.

Garden City is home to three "firsts" in the Dining and Retail Industries. These include the first drive-thru McDonalds, the first Little Ceasar's Pizza Treat (opened by Mike & Marian Ilitch in 1959) and the first KMart store. All three are still in business! Some people reprot that the 12st McD drive-thru was in Arizona, but that was in 1974 and old timers in Garden City remember the McD DT in their town launching in the late 50s or in the 60s. I think they were first.

The cities joining Garden City as suburbs of Detroit include Dearborn Heights, Romulus, Farmington, Canton, Wayne, Westland, Livonia, Redford, and Inkster. Garden City itself was patterened after 19th century English gardens and was begun on 160 acres of land received by a private individual from Andrew Jackson in the 19th century.

B.T. Evilpants lurked around Garden City, Michigan for many years, until he took off for parts lesser known in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. For awhile he alleged to be living I Hell, Michigan, but we can find no trace of such a town tagged with this moniker in that state, but it adds to local color and interest..

Mr. Evilpants was the rather annoying tenant of rmr for awhile, and seems to use that person’s abode as a way station at unexpected moments. Something about a catalogue of children’s devices, a dozen other businesses, and a presidential race or simple coup.

Please see both running serials about the life and times in the suburbs of Detroit post-Tool Time.

Now how did I miss this hub? Sadly, the Little Caesar's is now defunct. On a more historical note, the name came from the fact that every home came with a garden. This was around the time that victory gardens were on the rise. I believe it was also the birthplace of a phenomenon known as the garage home.

Too bad about the Little Ceasars - I think I knew a manager there at one time. Also think I worked for the insurance company that insured it. Interesting about garage homes and victory gardens. A tiny town of sorts - or at least limited spaces. Fascinating overall. I wonder what their Post Office looks like.

No , but a big thanks for the web page - Next trip I'll spend more time and get to know Hell a little better - the one in Michigan, you understand.

Music Fest of Hell - that's the ticket.

No problem! I've been to Hell, and back, many times. I was thinking about moving to Bad Axe, though. It's just a happy sounding name!

I didn't know Wicked Tattoos was doing videos. I have two tattoos from those guys! It's a little strange seeing pics of my little town, on Hubpages. Thanks, Patty.

Well, it looks like a nice town to me, close to other interesting sites and with so many "firsts" that it deserves a medal.

It's kind of a redneck town, Patty. It only covers a couple of square miles, and has at least three tattoo shops.
