Variety In Writing: Always a new contest or challenge at HubPages.
By participating in HubPages contests and challenges, I have increased Hub views,made new friends, stimulated an ongoing interest in writing, and increased earnings.
Each of the two times I participated in sunforged's 60 Day Challenges (60DC, 60DC2) for writing and promoting with the group, my earnings increased 30%. Participation in other group projects on HubPages and using promotion techniques learned in the 60DC and 60DC2, along with affiliates and ads, I was able to maintain steady earnings, despite some decreases in page views in the midst of the Google "content-farm" crackdown.
Despite Google Panda updates, additional algorithm changes, and refinements in HubPages formatting and content requirements, participation in the following sectors of the community has enabled me to earn higher income from the site and produce above a living wage.
Hub Questions
Hubber darrinintheden asked me the question concering how to draw traffic to a Hub. I thought immediately of a few methods that have brought success.
NUMBER ONE
One method of attracting traffic is to participate in HubPages activities such as asking questions as arrintheden has done and providing productive answers as many Hubbers do.
Answers can take the form of either short answers or full Hubs and either can bring curiosity from readers that may want to know the writer's stances on other topics or to be entertained or informed by their other Hubs.
NUMBER TWO
Paul Edmondson provides an example of a highly effective traffic-building strategy with his answer to them same question at this link. This is a strategy that has been successful in a number of portfoilios of related Hubs that I have written and connected. Jason Menayan first alerted me to this technique when I was a new Hubber and it has worked well. As Paul reminds us, content in these portfolios must be high quality, especially in originality. A portfolio of poor content will not draw traffic, but it might produce complaints.
A few of the portfolios that have succeeded for me include:
- Food and Recipes: Recipes From the Everglades - begin here and follow the connecting links that appear just ave the Comments boxes.
- What Is the History of the USA? - from mapping the New World to Barack Obama
- Native American Nations
- State Portals for High Demand Jobs and Relocation Resources
NUMBER THREE
A third example of traffic building is to link to other Hubbers' articles and to encourage them to link to yours. As an example for this article, you can see links in the paragraph above. Don't forget to place URL Trackers within your links to others' pages -- the link here is to an excellent Hub on the subject by HubPages' first Hubber, jimmythejock.
When you link back and forth between others' Hubs, youc an benefit from social networking sites that others use as well as well as your own contacts in this realm. Others to whom you link may encourage others to read your work, or once outside readers access these writers' articiles, they will find some of you own links as well. And it's fun! Social networking can be an effective method of gaining traffic for your Hubs and an interesting article on that topic and how to accomplish best results is located at:Online Social Networking Sites, written by WordPlay.
Join a Hub Challenge
Several ways of increasing Hub traffic present themselves right here in the HubPages Community. Here are a few of them -
HubMob Weekly Inspiration Topic
HubPages offers the Weekly HubMob (renamed the Weekly Inspiration), overseen by Princessa, and now Simone Smith. Each week on Sunday might, she presents a new topic about which we can write. The new top is posted in the HubPages Forum each week and Hubbers are invited to examine the topic and compose as many high-quality Hubs about it as possible. That's why its a Hubmob - lots of writers flash mob the Weekly Topic with outstanding articles!
This mob of activity also brings a flurry of additional readers to your Hubs in the HubMob. Writers in the HubMob as well as other Hubbers and non-member readers browse through the related Hubs because of the topical interest and the substantial writing activity that increases day by day. Not only has this increased traffic and income for HubMob Hubs, but it has attracted some readers that offered Hubbers writing jobs.
I've always had a good time with Hubmob, often writing three or more articles about the Weekly HubMob Topic. Even on weeks that I don't manage to come up with a Hub to add to the topic, I've enjoyed reading the other Hubbers' work.
So remember,
- The group of Hubs a Weekly Topic is the HubMob.
- Hubbers writing about the topic are HubMobsters.
- An article in the HubMob is a Hub.
- A HubMob writer is a Hubber and can be you -- any Hubpages member can write about the weekly topic and it's free to join.
HUBTRAILS
HubTrails is another sort of Hub Challenge. It involves writing high quality Hubs about travel about places. Travel involved can be for a variety of reasons - vacations, conferences, job search, relocation, retirement, anything travel. Our Hubber Ohma came up with this one a few months after she joined HubPages and I like it very much. Visit the HubTrails how-to Hub from Omha and look for forum posts about it. Other top Hubbers created external websites to promote these HubTrail Hubs and I have seen a lot of success among HubTrail Hubs. Join us!
30 Hubs in 30 Days - Increase Number of Hubs and IncreaseTrraffic
The 30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge can significantly increase traffic to your Hubs. For those that have not previously produces 30 high-quality Hubs per month, the increase in number places the Hubber's Internet presence into wider and more frequent view. It's a little like the difference between seeing only 1 billboard for a product along a stretch of highway, and seeing 30 billboards from the same company along the that route. The better quality your Hubs are for this challenge, the better will be the traffic results and income earned by your Hubs.
Anyone that is a member of HubPages can join this particular challenge and it has its own HubPages Forum at 30 Hubs in 30 Days HubChallengers.
HUBPAGES CONTESTS
HubPages sponsors Quarterly Contests in which HubPages writes can earn awards and cash prizes.
For example, during the first week of March 2010, the usual HubMob (Weekly Inspiration Ideas) added a stroke and connected with the Helpful Health Hubs Contest.
That was another opportunity to write about a particular topic, but on a changing daily basis for the month and an opportunity to write up to 3 Hubs maximum that are entered into a daily drawing for a $50 winner. Additional weekly prizes were awarded as well.

In my experience, participation in HubPages activities has also been effective in increasing Hub traffic. This has included Questions and Answers, HubMob, contests such as the Helpful Health Hubs Contest, the 30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge, and the HubNuggets program. I also volunteer for the HubNuggets Team and post in the forums, read others' Hubs and leave encouraging and constructive comments. Social networking can increase Hub traffic as well. I think the most successful methods for me have been 1) good, timely content, along with 2) participation in the HubPages community.

Hello hello - I'm certainly still learning from Hubbers everyday.
This is helpful. My attitude after I started writing on Hubpages was to make money primarily through Adsense and the search engines. I connected with some Hubbers but didn't participate like I could have until now. I admit, this is why it's hard writing for multiple sites.

Thank you very much for this helpful hub. I've been participating in the HubMob since last year and I can honestly say those hubs I wrote under the HubMobs are those that have the highest traffic. So, at least for me, joining up in the weekly hubmob worked. I'll give the 30 on 30 day challenge a try when I'm not so busy with my real life work :).

@ramkkasturi - The contests do not work in certain countries, because of prohibitive laws in those countries. HubPages has no influence to change this phenomenon. As for Hub Scores, they change according to how many people view your Hub, how many times readers rate it up or down, and several other factors. Success to you in your future writing!

Well it never ceases to amaze me (I love that phrase because my dearly departed mother often used it when beginning an instructional phase with me) when I realize how much I simply do not know. After reading this, I am slightly more confused that before. I guess that just goes to show you how much time it takes me to process information. I really need this traffic since what I am doing is more like a community service and I need a lot of traffic for people to read and give comments. You know, community services need response so as to weigh the effectiveness of the service and I felt asides going to rural areas, I can as well do the same here on the internet through a wonderful community as hubpages. Thanks once again for such an advice from an experienced and elderly hubber. I am privileged

Amazing, useful hub! I thought about the asking other members if they would like to link to each others hubs, but I thought we weren't allowed on the grounds that... I guess because it's too easy to get traffic that way.
The earlier comments about "On Hubpages you never stop learning." were correct. Ha ha!

I' in he second 60 Day Challenge, HubMob this week and last, and on the HubNggets Team. In fact, I'm the "odest"HubNugget Team member now - the others got so many writing jobs from exposure on HubPages and lsewhere that they are writing fulltime and we had to get more!

I love the community here, more than at any other site I'm on. I'm trying to participate as much as possible, doing questions, answers, trying hard to complete the 30/30 challenge this month. I think that Hubbers are some of the best people around, and I am proud to be one.

Just ran into this hub, this is a lot of info to absorb. I'm not very good at writing in English, so some of the advice are just not for me, unfortunately. I also don't know how to ask others to link back to my hubs if I linked to them, what if they didn't link back? Should I drop their link then? not sure :(
Great advice for a newbie. I'll go for the 30 hubs in 30 days challenge when I have a bit more time on my hands.
@snakebnaby - We're all doing a lot of linking with the "Suggest Links" feature at the top of our Hubs. But, if you have a Hub that is about the topic of another Hub, just email and ask the person to consider linking to you. Keep the links you think are useful.

With the recent changes in the Google seach/results system, income is holding steady and even increasing. Some of my Hubs are gaining traffic that have not previously done so. I am looking forward to more.

thanks for another great hub. I am fairly new to hubpages and I have been following you. Its a hub like this one that picks me right back up when I get discouraged because I see my traffic going down. I am never that sure about what I am doing regarding traffic, etc...bUT i KEEP WORKING AT IT. I am always amazed at how quickly you produce your quality hubs. I guess we get better and better as time goes on...

The more I read and write, the easier it is to increase the quality of writing; I write at HP about 20 hrs/week.

While I have been connected to hubpages for three years, it is only in the last couple of weeks I have found it again. I had forgotten about signing up years ago. These are all excellent suggestions to drive traffic. All seem to play on a variation of community participation. One thing I like is the new emails that display your articles to your existing followers. I actually think this makes it a lot easier to keep up with the community interests. Generally I don't like being bombarded with email, but in this instance it seems to be working. So Hubbers would be well advised to follow the people who write content they are most interested in... and not be afraid to join in. I tend to read more hubs of the people I am following because I can trust their content.
