How to Find a Job During a Recession
Many people give up during an economic recession, not knowing where to turn for help when their company declares bankruptcy or downsizes, causing them to lose their jobs. However, there are still some jobs available, the type and number dependent upon the state and city in which you live.
One way to avoid a disastrous end during a recession is never stop looking for a new job, no matter how secure your present job is or how much you like it or how old you are. Never stop looking.
Use the contacts you make to build a network of business associates and friends with whom you can share referrals. Further, after several years of referrals and contact, you can even ask your business associate friends for help and they can ask you.
Workers that are underemployed or unemployed can also benefit from information about which Industry Sectors of business and which companies are more likely to continue to hire new workers or replacement workers during an economic recession.

The recession that became evident in 2008 still encompasses vacant job openings in the late 2010s, even though the US experienced some downsizing and company closures. Economists feel that this fact will be true for each new recession that America should incur.
Reports from the federal government and workforce professionals across the nation in early December 2008 indicated that jobs were, and would continue to be, available in the following areas, as reported by the Associated Press:
Healthcare- With only 46,000,000 Generation X individuals in the possible labor pool, the 78 million Millennials in America will be short nurses and other practitioners, therapists, and diagnosticians they will need to help them, all the way through 2100. Generation Y (Millennials) also does not offer enough people to fill all of these healthcare positions. Long-term labor shortages are particularly urgent in the professions of Registered Nurse (RN) and Pharmacist.
Medical Equipment Repair and Maintenance Companies - This is another area in the Medical and Healthcare Industry that cannot be ignored and must continue to stay active. Therefore, workers must be hired to keep medical equipment in order. This includes hospital and medical practice equipment, personal medical equipment used by at-home patients and particularly by the wounded returning from wars such as those in Afghanistan and Iraq, and others. This also includes physical therapy equipment, vital to an aging population and to injured veterans and other clients. Millions of people need the services offered by medical equipment repair.
Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Organizations - Related to the Medical Industry and to the 1) Security and 2) Information Technology Industries, these two types of companies serve Physicians, Dentists, and Veterinarians as well as others, including government operations. They supply specialized medical equipment and provide the capabilities for storing large amounts of biological data. Medical professionals in isolated and under-served areas around the nation can earn large, secure incomes.
Job Growth During Recessions
The recession that occurred from 2008 to 2010 still encompassed(es) vacant job openings, even though the US experienced some downsizing and company closures. Economists feel that this fact will be true for each new recession that America should incur. The State of Texas, for example, continued to grow new jobs and seemed almost untouched by the Great Recession, except in a very few cities. Some other states were also fortunate in this way, often because of solid plans to inspire new growth long term. .

The Boom Boom Generation will be living longer as well, placing demands on healthcare systems and causing burdens through retirements from healthcare professions among their own age cohort.
Long-term labor shortages are particularly urgent in the professions of Registered Nurse (RN) and Pharmacist. In addition, many RNs are becoming Nurse Practitioners, because clients ar seeing them for quicker and less expensive care than offered by most physicians.
Other Industry Sectors that Are Hiring
Trucking Industry and Railroads - Transportation, especially freight for moving goods.
Natural Gas Production and Transport- Active in several areas around the country, the Alaskan pipeline project set to begin in January 2009 is an example of a multi-million dollar jobs and energy program.
Federal Reserve Bank- This seems counter-intuitive, given the mortgage crisis and the government financial bailouts, but the central bank (federal) has continued to hire. Company - The US Federal Government.
Engineering - Computer Engineers and Engineers in all areas of sustainability are being hired and will continue to be hired through at least 2020. Major firms needing engineers and engineering techs include:
- Microsoft Corp.,
- Cisco Systems Inc.
- International Business Machines Corp. [IBM]
The John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University hosted a conference for these three major players, along with other large firms.
The most outstanding news from this conference was that the largest portion of these employers reported that they laid off too many people during the last recession and could not accomplish their work. They also reported that they need to continue hiring during a recession, because since the economy cycles and will certainly recover, the corporations will require more workers to keep up with increasing demand.
Accountants and Auditors- Many accountants in the US state that there is always a need for accounting personnel, no matter the economic health of the country. Several states in the union have reported to the Bureau of Labor Statistics that Auditors and Accountants are among their Top 10 or Top 20 highest demand occupation projections through 2016 or 2018. In addition to this, federal, state, county, and city governments require these types of services and often do not have enough workers. The US Census requires workers continually.
In 2008, a recruitment campaign began for workers for the 2010 US Census. The same will occur in 2018 for Census2020.
Census takers and other accounting/auditing positions will employ workers for at least a year. Elements of the 2010 Census will be analyzed all the way through to the 2020 US Census, requiring additional workers. Company - The US Federal Government and local governments.
The website Inc.com of Inc. Magazine reports that Sales Persons and Software Developing Engineers are particularly likely to be hired, even in a recession.
Additional news is that the Aerospace Industry began to expand quickly in the early 2010s, requiring more workers in IT, Engineering, even Healthcare.
US Census2020 and Beyond
The US Census Bureau works all year long and records census numbers more often than only in the years ending in the number "0", like 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020, 2020, 2030, etc. New workers are needed often, but not as heavily as in the big nationwide census years once per decade. Once recorded, the census data is analyzed for years afterward as well, requiring additional workers.
In 2000, I helped recruit employees for the US Census 2000. In the US Census 2010 , America will have accumulated over 50,000,000 more residents; therefore. even more Census Takers and related employees will be needed this time around. These jobs will provide transitional employment for many workers that were laid off in 2007-2008.
The US Census is a major 10-year counting and analysis project that takes place across the United States. It requires many employees. In 2020, it will require an even greater number than it did form 2010..
This projects counts everyone that lives in the US in all parts of every one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and all the Island Areas associated with the USA. Again, it includes every single person that lives in the United States - all ages, races, ethnic groups, citizens, and even non-citizens. They will all be counted. After that the information will be compiled, data-entered, analyzed, and published over the following 10 years.
WHEN TO APPLY FOR A CENSUS JOB
- Autumn of 2018 - Recruitment of employees begins for local work. Information is available in brochures at your local library.
- Spring 2019 - Census workers door-to-door to update addresses nationwide. Some will have already quit and will need to be replaced.
- Autumn 2019 - Recruitment starts begins for census takers for 2010.
- January – March 2020 - Census questionnaires are mailed or delivered.
- April 1, 2020 - The official Census Day.
- April – July 2020 - Census takers go to all households that did not mail back a completed. Again, some workers will have already quit and will need to be replaced.

Economy and Employment Outlook Differ by State
Different types of jobs are available by state and metro area. For example, alternative energy jobs offer more openings in Wyoming, New Mexico, Alaska, and other states than in the rest of the union. In areas where there are University Consortia (groups of schools that cooperate), these groups usually have connections to large employers that offer jobs in specific areas.
