Chez Sophie Sur Le Pont, Since 2013

Chez Sophie Sur Le Pont had been located since 2005 on the Avenue de la Cathedrale, opened by Stephane and Sophie Wild of the famous Alsace region of France.

This second edition of Chez Sophie is located on the famous Esplanade Riel footbridge in Downtown Winnipeg that connects The Forks, the East Exchange District, and Greater Downtown with the historic St. Boniface French Quarter.

Menus are in French and English for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner; and include a full wine list and complete cocktail service in a French bistro atmosphere. All lunch and dinner entrees are accompanied by the soup of the day, a small salad, and French bread. Some of the desserts are made by the famous Le Croissant bakery on Tache Promenade on the other side of the river.

This location is larger than the original restaurant, still in operation, and this one has a boutique that offers hand made jewelry for sale.

Folklorama, Since 1970

A Metis leader, Louis Riel founded the Province of Manitoba and the coureur des bois woodmen and other French settled early on to enjoy the surroundings and resources. This all leads to an interest in the cutlures that come together in Manitoba, especially in Winnipeg.

August 4 to August 17 are the Folklorama Weeks in Winnipeg and Manitoba proper, celebrating the 44th Folklorama’s Festival in 2013.

The Festival supports 46 pavilions that celebrates the cultural diversity of Manitoba from First Nations to Eastern Asians, Europeans, Africans, and South Americans.

Half of the sponsored pavilions are open during Week 1 of the festival and the other half run During Week 2. Admission is $6.00 per pavilion all around the City of Winnipeg and free for ages 12 and under. Discount packages are available.

The Festival has won many awards since 1992, including the 2011 Internationally Known Event status as featured among the American Business Association's Top 100 Events in North America.

Projects and performers associated with the two-week festival are held year round in at last 15 different countries. International travel is encouraged for the preservation of cultures and languages as well.

Some of the best performances are given by First Nations groups in and near Winnipeg:

  • Aboriginal School of Dance - Also trains professional dancers among First Nations people. Their particular forte is a presentation of a 2-hour glow-in-the-dark dance called Glow.
  • Summer Bear Dance Troupe - Performs regularly at The Forks.
  • Walking Wolf Dancers & Singers - Trained in presenting a traditional full pow wow or invidual events.

Canadian Museum for Human Rights

Controversy surrounds the propriety of using the word genocide in conjunction with discussions of government treatment of Canadian First Nations and all Native North Americans.

The CMHR does nto advertize itself as a genocide museum. It does focus on the consequences of racism in society. Its goal is to encourage visitors to reflect on their own attitudes and prejudices in the hope developing tolerance in citizens of whatever country visitors call home.

The museum is located at The Forks where the Assiniboine and Red River meet (the fork of the rivers). The main building is complete and a grand opening is scheduled in 2014. Outdoor Summer Tours have been popular in 2013, run through the end of August and begin at the Via Rail Union Station, 123 Main Street, Winnipeg. Guides use French, English, and American Sign Language. No reservatons needed. FREE.

  • Wednesday through Saturday: The Rights Around Us, 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM.
  • Thursday Evenings: Growing a Better Future, 7:00 PM, families welcomed with activities and hands-on learning about food rights.
