Ways to Save Money On Food

Farmers' Markets and U-Pick produce farms provide an effective way to save money on weekly grocery bills. Not only are prices often less expensive at these places for local produce grown in your own hometown area, but they offer other advantages. Inn fact, buying larger quantities of local produce allows you to preserve and can it for future use at a good price.

Some food banks even accept donations of fruits and vegetables canned by local residents.

Detroit and Wayne County

Summer, Labor Day, and Harvest Season

Labor Day can be an excellent day to visit a local farm, because many of them plan family-friendly activites for the Labor Day Weekend. The good food items you purchase go beyond that initial fun.

Michigan is the home of goopd tasting crops of blackberries (my favorite), blueberries, red and black raspberries, and peaches. You can find all of these fruit crops at U-Pick farm markets.

Apple picking starts at the end of August and increases on Labor Day, while corn mazes are already built for the Harvest Season holidays.

On Tuesdays from July through October and during Thanksgiving Week, additionnal markets operate. On these special days, cooking demos are held, exercise classes, and other fun community based activities.

It's fun to go to the market. During the entire year, a wholesale market operates Molnday - Friday for the city's groceries and restaurants. It's quite busy. In 2014, the market administration decided to offer Made In Michigan items in a special Sunday Market.

For convenience , the market accepts cash and various credit and debit cards as well as the MIchigan Bridge Card that helps lower income familes with food.

This fabulous farm market is fun for everyone, with over 250 different vendors. A popular art gallery is located among the market vendors in a parmanent building. One 118-year-old company became the 1887 Devries Cheese Shop in 2013.

Staff bring in pumpkins for purchase and you can check out large collections of them for your Jack-o'-Lantern and piemaking. Plan to spend some time here, becuse the market has a concessions stand for refreshments when you want to rest or to have a meal.

This market provides a wide variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables for customers' pleasure durinkg 12 hours each Saturday, 5:00 am to 5:00 pm. It is a true Market Day of old and this schedule harkens back to the old farmers' market' of the late 1800s and early 1900s, when farmers brought crops to market in the city on Saturdays and purchased their own needs in the general store. Sometimes, they had a haircut at the barber shop that day as well. On some Saturday nights, a barn dance was also held.
